Este jueves 30 de septiembre, en medio de un clima de incertidumbre producida por las protestas de miembros de la Policía ecuatoriana por el supuesto retiro de varios beneficios laborales y la denuncia del Gobierno de que las protestas es parte de un intento golpe de Estado, diversos periodistas y comunicadores han sido agredidos en medio de las protestas. Hasta las 16:00, Fundamedios pudo comprobar los siguientes incidentes:
1.- Hernán Higuera, periodista de la cadena televisiva Ecuavisa fue agredido físicamente por uno de los guardias del presidente Rafael Correa. Higuera narró a Fundamedios que mientras cubría las protestas desde el techo de un automóvil, un policía intentaba empujarlo para que dejara de grabar, luego Higuera logró descender del auto y en ese momento un guardia presidencial lo agredió físicamente propinándole puñetes y patadas.
2.- Juan Carlos Correa, periodista de Canal Uno y otro de los agredidos indicó que se le impidió realizar la cobertura de los hechos en el cuartel policial dónde empezó la sublevación.
3.- Carolina Mela, reportera de Ecuador TV, expresó que policías intentaron retirar las cámaras y le impidieron a la fuerza que continuara reporteando.
4.- Juan Carlos Pérez, fotógrafo de Diario El Comercio de Santo Domingo de Los Tsáchilas, localidad ubicada a 133 Km de Quito, también fue agredido por policías y lo retuvieron por 20 minutos hasta que se identificó como periodista.
5.- Ana María Cañizales reportera de Teleamazonas fue agredida físicamente por policías en la Asamblea Nacional.
6.- Miguel Castillo, coordinador regional de Diario El Comercio de Ambato junto al camarógrafo fueron golpeados por policías y les lanzaron gas pimienta, además les arrebataron la cámara.
7.- En Ecuador TV y la Radio Pública, medios estatales, se denunció que los policías sublevados habrían querido cortar las transmisiones de estos medios.
8.- Eduardo Córdova y Roberto Molina periodista y camarógrafo respectivamente de Ecuador TV, medio público, fueron agredidos por policías en las instalaciones de la Asamblea Nacional. Ambos fueron golpeados hasta ser expulsados del lugar. Además les lanzaron gas lacrimógeno.
9.- Edith Jácome corresponsal de Teleamazonas en Ambato y el camarógrafo, fueron agredidos mientras cubrían en el Comando Conjunto de Tungurahua. Según Jácome un grupo de policías les arrojaron una botella con agua que impactó la oreja derecha de la periodista, lo que produjo una herida.
10.- Un fotógrafo de Revista Vistazo fue agredido por sujetos policiales en la Asamblea Nacional y luego prendieron fuego a su cámara. No se ha podido obtener su identidad .
11.- Ramón Bravo, periodista de la Radio Pública, sufrió síntomas de asfixia mientras realizaba una cobertura de la protesta policial. Recibió ayuda médica de emergencia.
12.- La cadena Telesur denuncia detención de equipo periodístico en Quito por «policías golpistas». Fundamedios se contactó con Telesur de Venezuela, y corroboraron la detención, pero no quisieron señalar la identidad de los periodistas agredidos.
12 attacks against journalists and the media in the midst of protests by the police
On Thursday 30 September, in the midst of a climate of social convulsion produced by protests by members of the Ecuadorian police against the alleged withdrawal of several work benefits, and the Government’s denunciation that the protests are part of an attempt to overthrow it, several journalists and communicators have been attacked. Until 16:00 Fundamedios was able to confirm the following incidents:
1. – Ecuavisa TV network journalist Hernán Higuera was physically attacked by one of President Rafael Correa’s security guards. Higuera told Fundamedios that a policeman tried to push him off a car’s roof from where he was covering the protests so he would stop recording the events. When Higuera got off the car, he was met by a presidential guard who punched and kicked him.
2.- Juan Carlos Correa, a journalist for Canal Uno TV station, who was also attacked, reported that he was prevented from covering events at the police barracks where the uprising began.
3.- Carolina Mela, a reporter for TV Ecuador, declared that members of the police attempted to take her cameras and forced her to stop reporting on the events.
4.-Juan Carlos Pérez, a photographer for the newspaper El Comercio de Santo Domingo of Los Tsáchilas, a town located 133 Km from Quito, was also attacked by policemen who retained him for 20 minutes until he identified himself as a journalist.
5.- Ana María Cañizales, a Teleamazonas reporter, was physically attacked by policemen at the National Assembly’s headquarters.
6.- Miguel Castillo, regional coordinator of the newspaper Diario El Comercio of Ambato, and his photographer, were hit by policemen who threw pepper spray at them and took their camera.
7.- Ecuador TV and Radio Pública, the State owned TV and radio stations, denounced that the protesting policemen had attempted to stop these media outlets from broadcasting.
8.- Eduardo Córdova and Roberto Molina, Ecuador TV journalist and photographer respectively, were attacked by policemen in the National Assembly’s facilities. They were both beaten until forced out of the place. The policemen also threw teargas at them.
9.- Edith Jácome, a correspondent for Teleamazonas in Ambato, and her photographer, were attacked when they were covering Tungurahua’s Joint Command. According to Jácome, a group of policemen threw a bottle of water at them. It hit the journalist on the right ear producing a wound.
10.- A Revista Vistazo photographer was attacked by policemen at the National Assembly who also set fire to his camera. He is still unidentified.
11.- Ramón Bravo, a Radio Pública journalist, started asphyxiating while he was covering the police’s protest. He received emergency medical assistance.
12.- Telesur network reported the detention of a press team in Quito by «pro-coup policemen». Fundamedios contacted Telesur Venezuela and corroborated the detention, but refused to give the identities of the journalists detained.
