State airline warns it will take legal action against passengers who shouted «out Correa out» during flight

A show of dissatisfaction by passengers who boarded flight EQ0174, covering the Cuenca-Quito route on Tuesday 5 July, could result in legal action. This was announced by State aviation company TAME through an official letter dated July 7, addressed to its passengers, after several people shouted «out Correa out» after the plane landed, when they saw the minister coordinator of economic policy, Patricio Rivera.

The letter, signed by Patricio Alberto Chávez, general manager of TAME EP, mentioned that « after having been informed about the incident caused by disruptive passengers who have been identified as related to the political organization CREO, actions that allegedly generated a situation of chaos and nervousness in the passenger cabin, even compromising flight safety protocols (…) the necessary security measures and legal actions will be taken to ensure that the aeronautical authorities proceed in accordance with current legislation to ensure the safety, tranquility and comfort of our passengers».

This document generated rejection in social networks, where discontent was expressed through the hashtag #TameAliadodelGobierno (#TameAllyoftheGovernment) stating that the action violates the right to freedom of expression. In a video that also circulated in social networks the passengers can be heard saying that they do not care if they are being taped by members of the Ministry of Interior or Intelligence agencies because they must express the popular feeling.

Lawyer Ana Belén Cordero, one of the passengers on that flight and who made public TAME’s letter in social networks, declared to Fundamedios that she has never received that kind of letter from any airline and stated that «there was no violence or crime so that they would say that legal action will be taken, so, in a letter to the airline, I offered myself as witness to the fact that there was no crime or violence against anyone, just a show of dissatisfaction and freedom of expression». Cordero said that in that flight she identified several personalities such as Macarena Valarezo, Fabricio Villamar, among others, who are linked to the opposition, but who not necessarily have a political affiliation with CREO. She used an ironic tone to say that the airline «should ask about political affiliation at check-in«.

It is unknown at the moment whether the airline has formally started legal action.
