El jueves 23 septiembre de 2010, Iván Rodríguez y Giovanny Rodriguez, periodista y camarógrafo, de la cadena televisiva Teleamazonas, fueron agredidos por un grupo de trabajadores de la empresa llantera, Continental General Tire Andina, en la ciudad de Cuenca, 442 km al sur de Quito.
El equipo periodístico llegó a la fábrica a realizar una cobertura sobre el levantamiento de una huelga protagonizada por los obreros que solicitaban el incremento de sus salarios y que provocó el cierre de la empresa durante 72 días. No obstante, cerca de 200 trabajadores impidieron que realicen su labor bajo el argumento de que el medio de comunicación «tergiversa la información», mientras gritaban «fuera Teleamazonas».
En declaraciones a Fundamedios, Iván Rodríguez manifestó que los obreros lo arrinconaron junto al camarógrafo para impedirles que realicen tomas . Afirmó que les lanzaron agua y el micrófono de la cámara fue golpeado por la turba. Agregó que minutos más tarde, Patricio Ortiz abogado del Comité de la empresa y María Eugenia Cuenca, relacionadora pública, ofrecieron disculpas directamente a los periodistas por la reacción de sus compañeros.
Darwin Zavala, Vicepresidente de Finanzas de la compañía reprochó la actitud de los trabajadores en contra del medio de comunicación.
Pese al incidente, la nota periodística fue difundida por la estación.
Tv press team attacked
On Thursday 23 September 2010, Iván Rodríguez and Giovanny Rodríguez, journalist and camera operator respectively of the TV network Teleamazonas, were attacked by a group of workers of the tire making company Continental General Tire Andina, in the city of Cuenca, 442 km south of Quito.
The press team arrived at the factory to cover the lifting of a strike by the workers who had requested an increase in their salaries and led the company to be closed down for 72 days. However, approximately 200 workers prevented them from doing their work stating the TV network «distorts information» and shouting «get out Teleamazonas».
Iván Rodríguez declared to Fundamedios that the workers cornered him and the camera operator so that they would not record any images. He stated that the workers threw water at them and that the camera was hit by the mob. He also added that a few minutes later Patricio Ortiz, the lawyer for the company’s Committee, and Maria Eugenia Cuenca, in charge of public relations, apologized to them directly for their comrades’ reaction.
Darwin Zavala, the company’s vice-president of finances, reproached the workers’ attitude against the TV network.
The report was broadcasted by the station in spite of the incident.
