El 13 de octubre de 2011, Andrés Campos, articulista de diario El Correo de Machala, ciudad ubicada a 530 Km al suroeste de Quito, manifestó que el medio para el cual escribe decidió no publicar uno de sus artículos porque su «contenido es muy fuerte y prefieren evitar tener problemas de tipo legal».
Campos aseguró a Fundamedios que esta es la primera vez que su opinión ha sido censurada, en los cuatro años que ha estado colaborando con el rotativo y cree que esto se debe al temor que tienen los medios de ser juzgados como lo ocurrido con el caso de diario El Universo, sus directivos y el editorialista Emilio Palacio, quienes fueron sentenciados a tres años de prisión y al pago indemnizatorio de $40 millones, por una demanda de injurias interpuesta por el presidente Rafael Correa, motivada a partir de un escrito de Palacio .
Andrés Carvajal, jefe de redacción de diario El Correo comentó que el artículo de Campos tiene acusaciones fuertes y han preferido no publicarlo, a menos que el articulista remita las pruebas de lo que afirma en la nota. «Poner una firma no es suficiente», aseveró Carvajal.
El artículo, que debió ser publicado la semana pasada, se titula «Autorizado a disparar en Huaquillas» y cuestiona la prepotencia y abuso de poder de un jefe de policía de la zona.
Por su parte, Alberto León, director de El Correo, aseguró a Fundamedios que desconocía del contenido de la nota de opinión y negó que desde el periódico se sienta temor respecto a posibles juicios que podrían afrontar.

On 13 October 2011, Andrés Campos, a feature writer for the newspaper El Correo de Machala, a city located 530 km southwest of Quito, declared that the paper for which he writes decided not to publish one of his articles because “its content is too strong and they would rather not have legal problems”.
Campos stated to Fundamedios that this is the first time his opinion has been censored in the four years he has been working with the newspaper and he believes this is due to the media’s fear of being judged, as happened with the paper El Universo, its directors and editorial writer Emilio Palacio. They were sentenced to three years in prison and the payment of $40 million after being sued for slander by President Rafael Correa for an article written by Palacio.
Andrés Carvajal, El Correo’s editor, commented that Campos’ article includes strong accusations and they have preferred not to publish it until the journalist can show evidence of what he states in his piece. “To put a signature is not enough”, Carvajal contended.
The article, which should have been published last week, is titled “Authorized to shoot in Huaquillas”, and questions the arrogance and abuse of power of a chief of police of the area.
Meanwhile, Alberto León, director of El Correo, assured Fundamedios that he was unaware of the contents of the piece and denied that the paper fears the possible trials it may have to face.
