Dic 19, 2013

ENGLISH VERSION

Radio national broadcast against human rights activists interrupts news segments

On December 17, 2013, a radio broadcast of nine and a half minutes interrupted the spaces of several morning news segments in different radio stations. The broadcast was intended to discredit the EcumenicComission of Human Rights due to several statements made by its director, sister Elsie Monge about International Human Rights Days.

Monge´s statements referred to the increasing cases of feminicide in the country, and argued that this is due to the fact that violence itself is fostered in the country; as an example, she mentioned that even social protests is criminalized. She further mentioned that these kind of oppressive acts resemble those perpetrated during the right-wing government of León Febres Cordero in the 1980´s.

The government´s broadcast rebutted such affirmation, and further mentioned that Monge´s affirmations were “proven false” and that they were absurd.

The government further detailed the advances in the field of human rights, and the off voice mentioned: “Don´t you know that in Ecuador only crimes are prosecuted, not people?”. And then, “ if someone has been judged it was because he committed a crime, not because his political beliefs. There are no cases in which Ecuador has directly violated someone´s human rights.  Thisgovernmentisrespectfull of humanrights”.

It must be noted that the Communications Law mandates that the  national broadcasts ordered by the Government “must be only used to inform n matters of public interest when it is really necessary”.
