El viernes 24 de septiembre de 2010, Nelson Ortiz Pizarra camarógrafo de la cadena televisiva RTS, fue agredido por un grupo de moradores del sector de Mapasingue Oeste, en la ciudad de Guayaquil, cuando registraba tomas de un operativo antidrogas.
Cuando un agente intentó capturar a un joven que supuestamente tenía en su poder droga, los habitantes del sector comenzaron a lanzar piedras contra policías, los reporteros y camarógrafos .
Una de las piedras impactó en la mano derecha de Ortiz, lo que causó fracturas en dos de sus dedos y que sea intervenido quirúrgicamente. El camarógrafo informó a Fundamedios que su recuperación tardará dos meses y que no presentará cargos por lo ocurrido, ya que teme represalias.
Según la nota informativa de RTS se logró detener a uno de los agresores por los desmanes ocurridos y por tenencia de estupefacientes.
Camera operator attacked during police operation
On Friday 24 September 2010, Nelson Ortiz Pizarra, a camera operator for RTS TV network, was attacked by a group of locals of the Mapasingue Oeste district in the city of Guayaquil, when he was recording images of a police drug crackdown.
When an officer attempted to detain a young man who was allegedly carrying drugs, the locals started to throw stones against the policemen, the reporters and the camera operators.
One of the stones hit Ortiz on the right hand, breaking two of his fingers so that he needed surgery. The cameraman reported to Fundamedios that his recovery will take two months and that he will not press charges for fear of reprisals.
According to RTS’ report, one of the aggressors responsible for the disturbance was detained. He was allegedly in possession of drugs.
