Citizen is attacked by presidential guard after shouting at the President «out Correa, out»

On the morning of December 11, 2015, Paúl Jacome, provincial leader of Unidad Popular political movement, reported that he was attacked by the presidential guard after shouting: «Out Correa, out» at the President of the Republic as his motorcade went past in Latacunga, a city located 60 Km south of Quito.

Jacome told Fundamedios that at about 9 in the morning, as he was about to enter his office, the president’s motorcade coincidentally went past followed by his guard. As he saw that the car’s windows were open, he shouted «Out Correa, out».  «Immediately the president made his car stop, he got out of it and challenged me to take him out. And then the presidential guard attacked me, I was hit in the face, stomach and arms. They wanted to detain me but didn’t because of the people’s reaction and the comrades who were there at the time prevented my arrest», said the citizen whose laptop and cell phone the guard tried to take from him.

Jacome said he is fine, because the blows were very mild, but he is outraged by the actions of a president, who in his judgment is not tolerant when citizens express their discontent. The leader said that after the incident, at least five civilians agents were stationed on the outside of his offices, and he feared that they might take action against him.

This is not the first time that the president has stopped his motorcade to challenge or rebuke citizens who make gestures or say things to him. Fundamedios has reported at least six cases. The most recent occurred on May 1 2015, when the young student Luis Calderón was detained and later sentenced to 20 hours of community service for allegedly making «obscene gestures» at President Rafael Correa, in the context of the protests that took place during International Workers’ Day in Quito.

Another similar case occurred on March 14, 2014, when an activist of the collective Yasunidos, David Mármol, was detained by members of the Presidential Guard and later beaten by unidentified persons, after having made a gesture with his hand as the presidential motorcade went past. The same happened with the singer and composer Jaime Guevara on 29 August 2013; with citizens Édison Ponce and Irma Parra in April 2011, in Riobamba and with Marcos Luis Sovenis in February 2011, in Babahoyo.
