El 14 de marzo de 2014, el ciudadano y activista del colectivo Yasunidos, David Mármol denunció que fue retenido por miembros de la Escolta Presidencial y posteriormente golpeado por desconocidos, tras haber hecho un gesto con su mano (pulgar hacia abajo), al paso de la caravana presidencial.
Mármol narró que la agresión ocurrió sobre las 14:00 cuando recogía firmas contra la explotación petrolera del Yasuní en un parque de la ciudad. En ese momento pasó la caravana presidencial y el activista mostró su pulgar hacia abajo como gesto de desaprobación a la política extractivista del gobierno.
“Fue esa la razón por la que el ultimo vehículo de la caravana presidencial se detuvo. Me llevaron al Itchimbía al puesto del 911, ahí estuve un tiempo detenido, nunca me bajaron del vehículo…”, comentó Mármol quien aseguró que después de una hora aproximadamente, y tras ser exhortado a pedir disculpas al Presidente por la supuesta agresión y ser amenazado con que iría a prisión entre dos meses a seis años, lo llevaron hasta una Unidad de Policía Comunitaria, ubicada en el Centro Histórico de la ciudad en donde “un tipo fornido” lo interrogó con la intención de que aceptara haber insultado al Presidente.
Finalmente y al no conseguir que pidiera disculpas, accedieron a dejarlo en libertad con la condición de que reflexionara su situación. También le dijeron que no querían volver a saber de él. Tras esto, lo dejaron en una calle aledaña en donde enseguida, tres hombres vestidos de civil lo atacaron y golpearon, mientras un cuarto grababa el hecho . “Me golpearon de tal manera que reventaron mi reloj. No me dijeron nada, no me robaron, solo me golpearon”, apuntó el activista quien aseguró que se este caso se trata de un abuso de poder.
La denuncia de este hecho fue presentada ante la Fiscalía el 17 de marzo. El colectivo Yasunidos rechazó esta agresión y aseguró que continuarán con más fuerza en la recolección de firmas.
Por su parte, el general Luis Castro, Jefe del Servicio de Protección Presidencial,en declaraciones recogidas por el portal Ecuadorinmediato, aseguró que se vieron obligados a intervenir ante insultos y gestos contra el Mandatario y que los protocolos de seguridad exigen que, en estos casos, se realice una entrevista al posible agresor para determinar si constituye o no en una amenaza.
Citizen is detained and attacked after making a gesture to presidential caravan
On March 14th, 2014, the citizen David Marmol, activist of Yasunidos Collective denounced that he was detained by members of the Presidential Guard and later beaten by unknown persons, for having made a gesture with his hand (thumb down), when the presidential caravan passed by.
Marmol said that the aggression occurred about 02:00 in the afternoon, when he was collecting signatures against the oil drilling in Yasuni Park, in Quito. At that time the presidential caravan passed and the activist showed his thumb down as a gesture of disapproval to the extractive government policy.
“For that reason the last vehicle of the caravan stopped. I was taken to the Itchimbía 911, where I spent a long time without getting off the Vehicle…”, said Marmol who also commented that after about an hour, and after being urged to apologize to the President for the alleged aggression against him, he was threatened with imprisonment from two months to six years, and later, he was taken to a community police unit, located in the historic center of the city where a «big guy» interrogated with the intention to make Marmol accept that he insulted the President.
Finally and after not getting any apology from Marmol, they agreed to release him with the condition of making him think over the situation. They also said that they did not want to hear from him anymore. After that, they left him on a nearby street where three men in civilian clothes attacked and punched Marmol, while a fourth recorded the situation. «They beat me so hard that they blew my watch. They said nothing to me, they did not steal anything from me, they just beat me, «said the activist, who affirmed that this case is an abuse of power.
The complaint of this attack was presented to the authorities on March 17th. The collective Yasunidos rejected this aggression and said that they will continue with more strength in their work of gathering signatures.
In the other hand, General Luis Castro, chief of the Presidential Protection, said, in declarations published y the news portal Ecuadorinmediato, that they were forced to intervene for the gestures and insults against the President. He also said that the security protocols require that, in these cases, an interview is conducted to determine the potential aggressor is whether or not a threat.
