Public officials constantly discredit journalists and the media who do not support the referendum

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa has said of journalists and the media that they are «irresponsible», «corrupt»and «ink hit men», that they «damage the government» and act as «legislators and supreme judges», during a series of recent public declarations.

On 18 February, after walking through the facilities of a hospital in Ambato, President Correa criticized journalists and the media for expressing themselves against the public consultation promoted by the government:»… (you) are the presidents, the legislators, the supreme judges and anyone who disagrees is a corrupt populist», he said.

The president also stated that the questions «…affect the interests of important media outlets» and it isfor this reason that they «organized a whole campaign declaring them unconstitutional and these are the things we have to fight against, it is one of the questions included in the referendum so that the press does not become this country’s Supreme Court».

The next day, through the 209 edition of his program Enlace Ciudadano, the Chief of State berated female TV presenters for expressing opinions about the unconstitutionality of the referendum’s questions saying that now «these good looking little girls are experts in constitutional law… any good looking girl, because she presents the news, has now become a constitutional expert. This shows the corruption and lack of professionalism of our press».

These expressions were rejected by female interviewers and columnists as discriminatory and disparaging of the role played by female journalists.

During the same program, Diego Borja, president of the Central Bank, provided information about the country’s largest debtors and said that some media’s owners were the bankrupt banks’ debtors.»When was this information published by the media outlets owned by these people?I never saw this in eleven years, because it was the owners themselves who were the debtors», said Borja.

These expressions were also rejected by journalists and the media’s directors as being untrue.

Finally, on 22 February, during an interview broadcasted by RadionHuancavilca in Guayaquil, the president attacked the media again saying their treatment of the issues covered by the public consultation has been «irresponsible».He also repeated that the media are «ink hit men» because they «kill people’s honor and dignity».

These expressions had already been rejected by the Journalists’ National Association, a group that represents media professionals in Ecuador.
