El 13 de noviembre de 2014 la Superintendencia de la Información y Comunicación (Supercom) sancionó a diario Extra con una amonestación escrita por no “evitar el tratamiento morboso de la información” sobre crímenes o accidentes, tras la publicación de dos notas periodísticas. A criterio de la entidad de control, la cual inició el proceso de oficio, el rotativo inobservó las normas deontológicas contempladas en el artículo 10, numeral 3, de la Ley Orgánica de Comunicación (LOC) y le instó a abstenerse de reincidir en dichas prácticas. Esta sanción se da dentro de un proceso iniciado de oficio por la Supercom por la publicación de las notas tituladas “Territorio de muerte” y “¡Ni el casco aguantó el ‘papazo!’ del 19 y 26 de julio, respectivamente. La primera nota se refería al accidente del avión de Malasya Airlines y la segunda a un accidente de tránsito en el norte de Quito.
Respecto a la primera nota sobre el accidente aéreo, la Supercom consideró que el medio de comunicación “no valoró ni considero la intimidad personal afectando de esta forma la dignidad humana” al mostrar los cuerpos calcinados y mutilados de las víctimas alrededor de los restos del avión. Sobre la segunda nota, la entidad concluyó que las imágenes publicadas “lastiman la sensibilidad humana, violando públicamente los derechos humanos”.
Para su resolución, la Supercom acogió los argumentos presentados en los análisis semióticos en los que se asegura que la nota sobre el accidente aéreo “incita a mirar contenidos que pervierten los sentidos de lo íntimo y lo privado, se transgrede la ley simbólica que organiza el pudor y con ello se exacerbaría el morbo.” También adujo que “se muestra la violencia insistida y amalgamada”. Sobre el accidente de tránsito, la Supercom concluyó en su análisis que “en la portada el sentido del morbo se expresa en la construcción del titular, mediante el empleo de signos enfáticos de puntuación en una dinámica que violenta la normativa lingüística del español sobre estos signos”. También, consideró, entre otras cosas, que el medio representa la muerte de manera “espectacularizada” que podría “promover la normalización de la violencia”, así como incitar a mirar contenidos que pervierten los sentidos.
En un editorial publicado el 26 de noviembre, Extra calificó como “morbosa persecusión” a las sanciones impuestas por la entidad de control . Sobre este último caso, el medio cuestionó la sanción y argumentó que “el morbo no está tipificado en la ley, por lo cual es jurídicamente imposible que se haya cometido una falta”.
Diario Extra ya ha sido sancionado en cuatro ocasiones por la Supercom. La primera, con una amonestación escrita ordenándole rectificar titulares; la segunda, con una multa del 10% de su facturación promediada de los tres últimos meses por haber incurrido en una supuesta reincidencia. La tercera, con la obligación de presentar disculpas públicas por la portada de “Lunes Sexy” y la más reciente, con una multa de USD 1360 por no haber entregado copias de ejemplares solicitados.

On November 13th 2014, the Superintendence of Information and Communication (SuperCom) sanctioned Extra diary with a written note for not «avoid the morbid treatment of information» about crimes or accidents, following the publication of two items journalist notes.

Regarding the first note on the plane crash, SuperCom considered that the media «did not assess or consider personal privacy thereby affecting human dignity» by showing the charred and mutilated bodies of victims around the wreckage. On the second note, SuperCom concluded that the images published
«hurt human sensibility, publicly violating human rights.»
For the resolution, SuperCom took in account the arguments presented in semiotic analysis that ensures the note on the crash «incites to look content that pervert the senses of the intimate and private; symbolic law organized by the modesty and thereby exacerbate the morbid actions. «He also argued that «in the note is shown stressed-violence».

In an editorial published on November 26th, Extra daily described as a «morbid persecution» about the sanctions imposed by the controlling entity (SuperCom). On this last case, the newspaper questioned the sanction and argued that «the morbid is not defined in the law, which is legally impossible to have committed an offense».
Extra Journal have been sanctioned four times before by the SuperCom. The first, with a written warning ordering to rectify note tittles; the second, with a penalty of 10% of its turnover averaged over the last three months for engaging in alleged recidivism. The third, with the obligation to submit a public apology for the cover of “Sexy Monday» and the most recent one, with a fine of USD 1360 for failure to deliver copies of copies requested.
