El lunes 15 de octubre de 2012, diario La Hora suspendió de manera indefinida los comentarios de los lectores de su versión digital, con el fin de evitar que los ciudadanos emitan comentarios ofensivos; a la vez que se disculpó por las expresiones agresivas vertidas por terceras personas.
En una nota publicada por el medio, se informó que «en los dos últimos días hemos podido constatar que algunos ciudadanos se han dedicado a la ingrata tarea de desfogar sus pasiones emitiendo ofensas en contra de autoridades del país, distorsionando con ello lo que debe entenderse como libre expresión de ideas», por lo que tomaron la decisión de suspender los comentarios ciudadanos.
Juana López, editora general del periódico, aseguró que esta decisión no responde a ninguna amenaza y que fue tomada con el fin de evitar que la gente que los lee se sienta ofendida con los insultos de «grueso calibre» que han detectado. López aseguró que buscarán un mecanismo eficaz que les permita filtrar esos insultos de la mejor manera y que, una vez instaurado dicho sistema, reanudarán la posibilidad de comentar en las notas.
Este es el segundo medio que decide eliminar la posibilidad de comentar en sus páginas . El 29 de septiembre, diario El Comercio anunció la suspensión de estos, en respuesta a un oficio amenazante enviado por el secretario nacional de Comunicación, Fernando Alvarado, quien aseguró que ciertas críticas emitidas por ciudadanos en la edición digital del periódico «atentan contra la honra y el buen nombre de las personas y del Presidente», arguyendo que esa «permisibilidad» que mantiene el medio configura «no solo el delito de injurias sino además una notoria provocación al odio».
Newspaper ‘La Hora’ is the second outlet that suspends readers’ comments on internet
On Monday 15 October 2012, La Hora suspended indefinitely its readers’ comments on the digital version of the paper to avoid the possibility of that some of them could be offensive. It also apologized for any aggressive expressions that may have been used by third parties.
An article published by the newspaper reported that “over the last few days we have verified that some citizens have dedicated themselves to the disagreeable task of venting their passions through offences against the country’s authorities, distorting the concept of the free expression of ideas». This led them to decide to suspend the public’s comments.
Juana López, the newspaper’s general editor, asserted that this decision did not respond to any kind of threat and that it was made in order to prevent their public from being offended by the “heavy duty” insults they have found.She affirmed that they will look for an efficient mechanism to allow them to filter these insults as best as possible and that, once the system is in place, the public will again be able to comment their articles.
This is the second newspaper that has decided to eliminate the possibility of commenting its articles.On 29 September, the newspaper El Comercio announced the suspension of comments in response to a threatening document from the National Communication Secretary Fernando Alvarado, who asserted that some of the public’s criticisms “attempt against the honor and good name of people and the president”, and claimed that the paper’s “permissibility” amounts “not just to an offence, but is a clear incitement to hatred”.
