ENGLISH VERSION

Newspaper publishes reply imposed by Ministry and questions the fact that in the original article the source was the Minister

On 29 November 2015, the newspaper La Hora published a reply imposed by the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) to a news story published on 23 November titled «The cuts will affect new children’s centers», whose main source was Minister Betty Tola. The reply titled «Budget cuts will not affect State children’s centers» was sent to the newspaper previously laid out as if it was an article produced by the paper and at the request of the Ministry’s director of communications, Silvia Zurita.

The newspaper published the text with an attached letter to Zurita, where it stated that «text imposed (…) abusively exceeds the limits of the law, but knowing that there is no chance of getting a fair trial and that the penalty will be imminent, we publish it while reserving the right to explain to our readers the whole context». In the letter the newspaper also asserted that it was «surprised» by the fact that the text the official called a ‘reply’ confirmed the original text and reminded her that a reply is a response to something, making it «paradoxical» that the main source of the text being challenged was precisely the minister.

La Hora also stated that «the only novelty» provided by the new text was that more centers will be built with finances provided by other sources, but without saying how many or what the budget will be.
