El viernes 04 de mayo de 2012, Orlando Pérez, director del diario del Estado El Telégrafo informó, vía telefónica, a William Sánchez, exarticulista de ese rotativo, que no recibirá más sus artículos.
Según Sánchez, Pérez llamó a su teléfono convencional y, en tono molesto le dio la noticia. Antes, el 18 de abril, este directivo exigió explicaciones a Sánchez, por haberse contactado con FUNDAMEDIOS para denunciar que fue víctima de censura semanas atrás, cuando ese diario dejó de publicar sus artículos.
Mediante un correo electrónico, Pérez escribió a Sánchez lo siguiente: «como usted ha tenido la ‘gentileza’ de ‘quejarse’ ante Fundamedios por la no publicación de un artículo suyo, le ruego explicarnos por esta vía, cuáles son los motivos para tratar un asunto interno del diario con una entidad como Fundamedios, antes de tomar una decisión en procura de mantener el buen nombre de nuestra institución»
Frente a ello, Sánchez respondió al directivo de El Telégrafo a través de una carta que afirmaba que «la violación de un derecho constitucional no es asunto privado ni administrativo»; que»mantener el buen nombre del diario es su responsabilidad y por ello debe vigilar que no se atropellen los derechos de los articulistas, entre otros, y quien debe explicaciones de la censura al susodicho artículo, es usted, no yo» . En la misiva también aseguró que continuaría enviando sus artículos hasta ser objetado con fundamentos, pues la regularidad en la colaboración había creado una relación de hecho.
Desde el pasado 15 de abril, El Telégrafo dejó de publicar la columna dominical de Sánchez. La última, que debió salir en esa fecha bajo el título Todos Somos Como La Hierba, hacía alusión a que no hay que endiosarse por el poder, un tema que, a decir de su autor, pudo haber incomodado a los directivos del medio.
State newspaper director threatens writer with retaliations after he denounced censorship
On Friday 4 May 2012, Orlando Pérez, director of State newspaper El Telégrafo telephoned William Sánchez, former feature writer for the paper, to inform him that he will not receive his articles any more.
According to Sánchez, Pérez phoned his home number and gave him the news sounding annoyed.Sometime before, on 18 April, the newspaper director had demanded an explanation from Sánchez because he had contacted FUNDAMEDIOS to denounce he had been the victim of censorship a few weeks before when the newspaper stopped publishing his articles.
Pérez sent Sánchez an e-mail stating the following:“as you have had the ‘courtesy’ of ‘complaining’ before Fundamedios because one of your articles was not published, I beg you to explain through this channel what were the motives that led you to handle an internal affair of the newspaper with an entity like Fundamedios before making a decision to maintain the good name of our institution”.
Sánchez replied through a letter in which he stated that “the infringement of a constitutional right is not a private or administrative affair”; that “to maintain the newspaper’s good name is your responsibility and because of that you should make sure that the rights of feature writers, among others, are not trampled, and who owes explanations concerning the censorship of the article in question is you, not I”.In the letter he also said that he would continue sending his articles until he was objected to with proper grounds, because the regularity of his collaboration had created a de facto working relationship.
El Telégrafo stopped publishing Sánchez’s Sunday column on 15 April.The last one, which should have been published on that date with the title TodosSomos Como la Hierba (We Are All like Grass) alluded to the fact that power should not lead one to believe he is god, an issue which, according to the writer, could have made the newspaper’s directors uncomfortable.
