ENGLISH VERSION

TV station team attacked by mob

On 18 October 2010, Félix Narváez, a reporter for TV network Ecuavisa, and his camera operator and assistant, Jhonny Llerena and Javier Argüello, were threatened by a mob of government sympathizers while they were recording a protest outside the Presidential Palace in Quito.

The relatives of the policemen who participated in the 30 September uprising were requesting a presidential amnesty for those accused, while the government’s sympathizers opposed them.

Féliz Narváez and his team were recording the events when several of the pro-government demonstrators began to insult the journalists accusing them of being «liars» and having «sold out». They were carrying placards that read: «Corrupt press».

Narváez declared to Fundamedios that the demonstrators threw plastic bottles and stones at them while they insulted the journalists. Meanwhile, Llerena stated that the mob cornered the journalists in an attempt to intimidate them, but were stopped by the Police.
