El sábado 20 de agosto de 2011, el fotoperiodista de diario Expreso Stalin Díaz fue detenido por la policía durante un operativo en un club ubicado en el centro de Guayaquil.
De acuerdo con la versión de Díaz, alrededor de las 16:00, un piquete de gendarmes, comandados por el Comisario Quinto de Policía de Guayas, allanaron un supuesto club ilegal en donde encontraron alrededor de 10 mujeres dedicadas presuntamente a la prostitución y más de ocho clientes. Una vez iniciado el operativo, los uniformados se percataron que alguien tocaba la puerta y al abrirla, se encontraron con el fotoperiodista .
Tras identificarse como cronista gráfico y explicar a los policías que se encontraba realizando una cobertura sobre los locales que brindan el servicio para ver los partidos del campeonato nacional de fútbol y el ambiente que allí se vive, el jefe a cargo del operativo ordenó su detención, ignorando su versión.
Díaz dijo que trató de explicar la situación, pero solo recibió ofensas contra su actividad.
El cronista gráfico permaneció detenido hasta las 20:00, pero fue liberado tras la orden de un general de la Policía que se había enterado del asunto y antes de que se elaborara el respectivo parte policial.
Photojournalist is detained during operation in allegedly illegal club
On saturday 20 august 2011, Expreso newspaper photojournalist Stalin Díaz was detained by the police during an operation in a club located in the center of Guayaquil.
According to Díaz’s version, at approximately 4:00 pm, a police squad commanded by the Fifth Guayas Chief of Police raided an allegedly illegal club where approximately ten women who supposedly engaged in prostitution were found, as well as more than eight clients.Once the operation started, the policemen noticed that someone was at the door and on opening it found the journalist.
After identifying himself as a photojournalist and explaining to the police that he was working on a report about premises where the national football championship is broadcasted by TV and the atmosphere in them, the chief in charge of the operation ordered his arrest ignoring his version.
Díaz declared that he attempted to explain the situation, but was only abused because of his work in return.
The photojournalist was kept under arrest until 8:00 pm and was released after a police general who had heard about the event issued the order to do so and before the corresponding police report was written up.
