Mar 5, 2015

ENGLISH VERSION

Government condemns newspaper that published investigation on the concentration of media outlets in the hands of mexican tycoon

On the evening of February 26 2014, a seven minute TV chain program interrupted the regular programming to discredit an investigation by the newspaper El Universo regarding the media outlets in the hands of Mexican magnate Ángel González stating among other things that the newspaper“withheld information from the public”. The Communication Secretariat justified broadcasting the chain stating that “information published repeatedly by a national newspaper in recent days, contains serious omissions in the information provided to the public, so we must proceed to tell the truth and make the information transparent saying that which the newspaper withheld from the citizens”.

The chain asserted that “the list of media outlets and the report published by El Universo is not reliable or factual, because it hides a lot of information; it hides most of the truth. El Universo conceals the properties of all its partners in the AEDEP. It hides information by saying that groups that allegedly own a single media outlet actually own more than half a dozen”.

After this, the government program showed a list of the media outlets that are in private hands, without mentioning those owned by the Mexican magnate, and concluded with the following statement: “All these groups manage communication business empires, private groups than in previous governments had lucrative contracts with the State and today, because they find themselves unable to continue doing business, are in constant opposition of the Citizens’ Revolution, because they no longer have the privileges of the past. These business groups that manage information were totally against the Communication Law, they complained against the sale of businesses that did not deal with communication (…) Here is the real concentration of media ownership, the great oligopoly of the business groups that have always run the country. All partners in the AEDEP and the association of Television Stations. All this was hidden by El Universo so as not to offend its partners and uphold their interests. This is the truth”.

This chain, which was also repeated in the latest presidential Enlace Ciudadano, his regular Saturday program, was a result of a warning made by President Correa through Twitter. On February 23 2015, he challenged El Universo to publish information that he would send the newspaper concerning the alleged concentration of frequencies in family groups, although he avoided referring to El Universo’s investigation about the concentration of more than 16 media outlets in the hands of the Mexican magnate Ángel González.
