ENGLISH VERSION

Ecuadorian government starts a campaign to force the rectification of a headline while newspaper denounces attempts of anhilation

From May 31 2013, the National Secretariat for Communication SECOM, started a mediatic campaign againstDiario Hoy, from Quito. Though national broadcasts in radio and TV the government accused DiarioHoy  that it had “twisted” a headline published by news agenvy AFP that on May 31 published: “Correa says that gay marriage is just a fad”.

On this regard, Diario Hoy published an editorial on June 6; “31 years of Independence and pluralism”. The editorial, said, among other things that “The President has mentioned this newspaper is almost broke. We have certainly known hardships in other Government for standing up for our editorial in an independent fashion. Those hardships have worsened with this Government, and now everything suggests that there is an official decision to eliminate Dario Hoy. This is the only way to understand the numerous campaigns the Government does against us using State funds, and the so called requests for rectification even when this Diary has acted professionally. This is the only way to understand the persecution against our Director, perpetrated by State-administrated media, which are still used against all those who dare to speak their minds”.

Furthermore, the editorial denounced other facts on the campaign against Diario Hoy, such as the removal of official advertisement, cancelling printing contracts and other many actions carried out by State officials.

Recently, the National Secretary of Communication Fernando Alvarado addressed Diario Hoy with a letter indicating that the above mentioned headline “is not compatible with the truth (…) and it misleads readers while grossly and unethically modifying the note published by news agency AFP”.

On June 4, Diario Hoy published the letter sent by Alvarado. Under an article named “SECOM complaints about a headline published by this Diary”, it explained that “this newspaper has not twisted the information from AFP”. José Hernández, Adjunct Director of Diario Hoy, also published an article named “The Government makes up a mistake”, indicating that, “it is outrageous to correct mistakes created by the Governments own propaganda machinery, and to do it forced by their own power”. He further explained that the title of the May 31 note was basedon the information provided by news agency AFP, and not on a radio interview the President did, as suggested.

During  Weekly Saturday Broadcast N° 324, Correa warned that Diario Hoy must mend the headline. “Otherwise, we will go to judicial instances”. The National Ombudsman joined SECOM´s request through a letter.

SECOM has ordained several radio and TV broadcasts to say that “up to this moment, Diario Hoy has not mended the lies it has published, as the Constitution orders. (…) The headline was false, and even when these lies have been brought to light, Diario Hoy refuses to correct them and keeps lying to its readers and advertisers. We are counting the hours until we see the truth published in the pages of Diario Hoy”.
