El martes 24 de agosto de 2010, Ramón Vergara camarógrafo de la cadena televisiva Ecuavisa de la ciudad de Guayaquil, fue agredido por guardias del Registro Civil estatal, cuando usuarios intentaban denunciar ante las cámaras la supuesta demora en los trámites que se gestionan en esa entidad.
El camarógrafo estaba registrando tomas al interior de la entidad pública mientras varios usuarios protestaban por su descontento con la atención que brindan los empleados de esa entidad pública, cuando varios guardias de la institución intentaron impedir que Vergara siguiera con la grabación, ante su negativa los escoltas lo empujaron y golpearon hasta que, en medio de empellones, lograron expulsarlo del edificio.
En declaraciones a Fundamedios Vergara ratificó que los guardias lo agredieron «de forma cobarde: fueron tres y cuatro guardias».
Por otro lado, Lisseth Esteves subdirectora del Registro Civil negó que algún guardia de seguridad de esa dependencia haya agredido al camarógrafo, pese a las tomas de la agresión transmitidas por varios canales de televisión .
Las personas que presenciaron el hecho se solidarizaron con el periodista y protestaron por el incidente, a pesar del mismo, Vergara logró efectuar la cobertura periodística.
Fundamedios condena esta agresión ocurrida en un edificio público en el cual se debería garantizar el libre trabajo periodístico y por ello pide sanciones para los responsables.
Guards attack camera operator
On Tuesday 24 August 2010, Ramón Vergara, a camera operator for TV network Ecuavisa in Guayaquil, was attacked by guards of the State’s Civil Registry when users of the system were attempting to denounce, before the cameras, an alleged delay in the procedures processed in this entity.
The camera operator was recording images of the public entity’s interior while several users were expressing their dissatisfaction with the public entity’s service when several of the institution’s guards attempted to prevent Vergara from taping. When he refused, the guards pushed and beat him until they succeeded in shoving him out of the building.
Vergara ratified to Fundamedios that the guards attacked him “in a cowardly way: there were three or four guards”.
On the other hand, Lisseth Esteves, assistant director of the Civil Registry denied that any of the entity’s security guards attacked the camera operator, even though images of the aggression were broadcasted by several TV stations.
The people who witnessed the event showed their solidarity with the journalist and protested against the incident. Vergara managed to fulfill his work despite it.
Fundamedios condemns this attack which took place in a public building, where the free exercise of journalism should be guaranteed, and asks for sanctions against those responsible.
