Newspaper publishes rectification under protest, considering it government publicity

On 5 August 2015, La Hora newspaper published under protest a rectification sent by the Internal Revenue Service (SRI). The media outlet clearly stated that it was publishing the content to avoid being penalized by the regulating entity. It questioned, however, the fact that the text did not explain the errors that allegedly appeared in the newspaper article concerning  changes in the government’s tax regime, but instead presented a «justification of the management» of that state entity.

The newspaper devoted three quarters of page B1 to publish the SRI’s rectification of the article titled: «Tax changes have not stopped since 2007», published on 22 June. Instead, the State entity sent a note that reached the newsroom previously set out and titled: «Since 2007 reforms boost tax incentives», which stated that the government, through amendments to the Law and various resolutions, has established benefits for taxpayers.

In an accompanying editor’s note, the newspaper rejected «the imposition of this type of content that attempts to fool readers by presenting propaganda as information, abusing the Communications Law». They asserted that they will continue contributing to the national debate with a free voice despite the harassment.
