El 26 de agosto de 2014, la empresa que edita diario Hoy, Edimpres S.A., suspendió todas sus operaciones, tras la decisión de parte de la Superintendencia de Compañías, de liquidar de oficio a la compañía. Con esto, el periódico ha sido imposibilitado de continuar editando, tanto su edición digital como la impresa de fin de semana.
En diálogo con Fundamedios, Diego Ordóñez, abogado del diario aseguró que en horas de la tarde recibieron la visita de un liquidador nombrado por el ente de control, quien ya ha tomado posesión de su cargo y ha ordenado suspender toda actividad.
Ordóñez explicó que la empresa había decidido entrar en proceso de liquidación voluntaria, nombrando a su actual director, Jaime Mantilla como liquidador. Sin embargo, eso no fue aceptado. «La administración de Edimpres se enteró el viernes pasado a través de una nota publicada en El Telégrafo de que esa Superintendencia nombraría a un liquidador«, apuntó el abogado quien cuestionó que nunca existió una notificación oficial.
En ese sentido, Ordóñez también expresó sentirse sorprendido por la rapidez en la que se llevó el proceso.
El pasado 22 de agosto el diario estatal El Telégrafo, en su nota titulada «A disolución 730 empresas por incumplir la ley» informó que «la Superintendencia de Compañías disolverá a 730 empresas que durante 2 años (2012 y 2013) registraron pérdidas del 50% o más del capital social, de acuerdo a los estados financieros, y que dentro de los 30 días plazo no subsanaron la causal de disolución establecida en el artículo 361 de la Ley de Compañías«. Entre ellas nombró a Edimpres.
En una edición posterior del 24 de agosto, la titular de esta entidad de control,Suad Manssur, afirmó a El Telégrafo que Edimpres ha sido disuelta por pérdidas y que los descargos presentados por su defensa no fueron suficientes . También aseguró que una vez disuelta la empresa no debe seguir operando, solo pueden cobrar deudas y pagar haberes.
El 27 de junio, Diario Hoy anunció la suspensión definitiva de su edición impresa diaria, argumentando un «permanente boicot publicitario» y un escenario adverso para la prensa con la aplicación de la Ley de Comunicación, tras lo que se vino una campaña de desprestigio de parte del gobierno en contra de ese medio, con la emisión de cadenas, así como notas en los medios estatales para descalificar a la empresa periodística. A esto se sumó una multa de USD 57 800 impuesta por la Superintendencia de Comunicación, por supuestamente incumplir con la difusión del tiraje de 17 ediciones.
State liquidator orders journal to stop operating and paralyzes their entire editions

In addition to that, the journal was forced to pay a fine of USD 57,800 imposed by the Superintendence of Communication, for allegedly not publishing their circulation number in 17 editions.
