ENGLISH VERSION

Newspaper’s offices suffer possible attempt

On 16 November 2010, the offices of the newspaper El Universo, located in northern Quito, suffered an attack by unidentified persons who shattered one of the building’s glass front doors.

Fernando Ampuero, the newspaper’s manager and a witness of the event, told Fundamedios that the attack took place at 18:25 when he and another four people of the administrative area were in their offices in the ground floor and heard what sounded like an explosion.

Ampuero declared that he went out to investigate what was going on and noticed that one of the front doors was shattered, «as if something had gone through it».

Despite finding no more evidence than some kind of small screw, the following day they saw the building’s security camera had recorded two unidentified persons on a bike who climbed onto the sidewalk, threw something, stopped in a suspicious way and then left.

A formal complaint was filed that same night with the judicial police so that the relevant verifications could take place.  Ampuero commented that they thought at first it could have been an attempted robbery, but the police discarded this theory because of the time of the event and because the security video makes it look like an attack.
