José Cadena, propietario del semanario «El Vocero», de la provincia amazónica de Sucumbíos -ubicada al noreste del país- enfrenta una demanda por daño a la imagen y a la honra interpuesta ante la Fiscalía por el Prefecto de esta localidad, Orlando Grefa, tras una publicación sobre una denuncia presentada por el Viceprefecto Oswaldo Calvopiña.
Cadena informó a Fundamedios que esta demanda se presentó el pasado 27 de septiembre de 2010 ante el Fiscal José Beltrán, luego de que su medio publicó información acerca de una denuncia que el Viceprefecto presentó en contra de Grefa, por supuesto delito de cohecho y peculado. Según el comunicador, esta publicación disgustó a la autoridad provincial y ocasionó la demanda.
Sin embargo, la demanda no es la única acción que la autoridad ha tomado en su contra. Cadena aseguró ser blanco de constantes llamadas intimidantes que le exigen abstenerse de publicar denuncias contra el Prefecto. Cadena denunció, además, que ha sido marginado del Gobierno Provincial de Sucumbíos ya que no se lo invita a ruedas de prensa y se le ha negado la pauta publicitaria para su medio.
Al momento, el comunicador comentó que la demanda no ha seguido su curso y su trámite se encuentra paralizado. Sin embargo, dijo que continuará con la misma línea crítica y de denuncia ante irregularidades de las autoridades .
Por su parte, el Prefecto Orlando Grefa aseguró a Fundamedios que él no está en contra de nadie y de ningún medio de comunicación y que lo único que le han pedido al periódico, por intermedio de la fiscalía, es documentación sobre qué y a pedido de quién se publicó información en su contra, algo que, «no quisieron entregarla». «Solo queremos que nos aclare si hay alguna información que la ciudadanía no comentó. Pero si no hay ninguna voluntad por parte del medio, nosotros tampoco podemos quedarnos», aseguró Grefa.
Amazonian newspaper faces lawsuit for publishing allegations against a prefect
José Cadena, owner of the weekly «El Vocero», of the Amazonian province Sucumbíos – in northeastern Ecuador – is facing a lawsuit filed before the Prosecutor’s Office by Prefect Orlando Grefa, who has accused the paper of damaging his image and his honor after it published allegations made against him made by vice-prefect Oswaldo Calvopiña.
Cadena reported to Fundamedios that the lawsuit was filed on 27 September 2010 before Public Prosecutor José Beltrán after his newspaper published information about allegations made against Grefa by the vice-prefect accusing him of bribery and embezzlement. According to the communicator, the lawsuit was the result of the provincial authority’s dislike of the information published by the paper.
However, the lawsuit is not the only action taken by the prefect against Cadena, who maintains he has been constantly receiving intimidating calls demanding that he should abstain from publishing accusations against the prefect. Cadena has denounced too that he is being marginalized by the Sucumbíos Provincial Government by not being invited to press conferences or getting official advertising.
The communicator has commented that the lawsuit is at a standstill for the time. He said, however, that he shall continue following the same critical editorial line and publishing information of any irregularities committed by the authorities.
On the other hand, Prefect Orlando Grefa insisted to Fundamedios that he is not against any one particular person or media outlet and that the only thing he has asked the newspaper, through the Public Prosecutor’s Office, is documents that show evidence of the allegations against him and who requested that they should be published, but «they didn’t want to hand it in». «We only want to know if there is any information that the public has not commented on. But if the newspaper shows no goodwill, we can’t just grin and bear it», he stated.
