El 19 de septiembre de 2012, la periodista Jeanette Hinostroza confirmó públicamente que recibió amenazas que atentan contra su seguridad e integridad física y anunció su retiro temporal del espacio de información y entrevistas «La Mañana de 24 horas» de Teleamazonas, como una medida preventiva.
Hinostroza se ausentó el viernes pasado de su espacio, lo que generó varios rumores, pues ese día, se iba a difundir la tercera entrega de una investigación titulada «Los vínculos del poder», referentes a las irregularidades en torno a un préstamo otorgado a un ciudadano argentino de apellido Dusac y su relación con Pedro Delgado, titular del Banco Central del Ecuador y primo del Presidente
Hinostroza justificó su ausencia del viernes pasado y narró, durante su espacio, que «mientras se preparaba la tercera entrega de esta investigación, recibí una llamada que amenazaba mi integridad física y seguridad personal. Como no se con qué clase de personas estamos tratando, decidí, en conjunto con los directivos de Teleamazonas, tomar una acción preventiva y no presentarme el viernes en el programa».
Refiréndose a la denuncia, la periodista exhortó a las autoridades a que se investigue el caso y preguntó «¿En qué momento se volteó el mundo y ahora los periodistas que hacen denuncias y las sustentan son enjuiciados o amenazados? Esta no es una denuncia en contra del gobierno ni de nadie en particular como injustamente se interpreta, esta es una denuncia en contra de la corrupción que tanto daño le hace al país, cuando todos deberíamos apuntar hacia el mismo lado, los dedos del gobierno se voltean inexplicablemente y señalan a los periodistas. Nosotros estamos haciendo nuestro trabajo».
Hinostroza aseguró que lleva varios años haciendo periodismo de investigación y que ha denunciado casos de corrupción iguales o más delicados que el que se está presentando, pero que nunca nadie le había hecho una amenaza, ni siquiera cuando trabajó en Colombia, en medio de la cruenta guerra del gobierno colombiano y el cartel de Cali y con una guerrilla sin principios ni límites. «Si estuviera sola, tengan la seguridad que habría ido hasta las últimas consecuencias, tal vez este país necesita un muerto o un periodista injustamente preso para reaccionar ante lo que está pasando, pero esa no es mi realidad, no estoy sola», apuntó.
Finalmente, la periodista afirmó que, después de mucho pensar, decidió que lo más adecuado era ausentarse de este espacio informativo durante un tiempo, pero continuará al mando y la dirección del programa 30 Plus y a cargo de algunos reportajes especiales . También reiteró que tiene todo el apoyo del medio y agradeció la oferta de protección del Ministro del Interior José Serrano, la cual no aceptó porque, según dijo no le parece justo que un periodista tenga que estar rodeado de guardaespaldas para hacer su trabajo.
Jeanette Hinostroza es la tercera periodista que se ve obligada a salir de de los noticieros matutinos de la TV ecuatoriana. Antes, ya lo hizo el periodista Jorge Ortiz, del mismo canal y Carlos Vera, de Ecuavisa. El horario matutino ha sido, tradicionalmente, el espacio para las entrevistas, el debate y las opiniones políticas.
Investigative journalist leaves interview program after being threatened
On 19 September 2012, journalist Jeanette Hinostroza confirmed publicly that she has received threats that attempt against her safety and physical integrity and announced her temporary withdrawal from Teleamazonas news and interview program «La Mañana de 24 Horas» as a preventive measure.
Hinostroza did not appear in her program last Friday, which gave rise to several rumors, because that day the third chapter of an investigation titled «Los vínculos del poder», concerning the irregularities of a loan granted to an Argentinian citizen called Dusac and his relationship with Pedro Delgado, president of the Central Bank and the president’s cousin, was going to be broadcasted.
Hinostroza justified her absence on Friday and told, during the next issue of the program that “while I was preparing for the third chapter of this investigation, I received a call threatening my physical integrity and personal security. As I do not know what kind of people we are dealing with, Teleamazonas’ directors and I made the joint decision to take preventive actions which meant not appearing in the program on Friday”.
Referring to the accusation, the journalist exhorted the authorities to investigate the case and asked “When did the world turn upside down so that now journalists who make accusations and present evidence for them are prosecuted or threatened? This is not an accusation against the government or somebody in particular as it has been unfairly interpreted, it is an accusation against the corruption that damages the country so much; when everybody should be pointing towards the same side, the government’s fingers inexplicably turn round and point towards the journalists. We are doing our jobs”.
Hinostroza assured that she has been doing journalistic investigations for several years and has denounced corruption cases that were similar or even more delicate than the one she is presenting, but nobody had ever threatened her before, not even when she worked in Colombia as the ruthless war between the Colombian Government and the Cali cartel was being waged and with a guerrilla that had no principles or limits. “If I were on my own, be assured that I would have continued to the bitter end, maybe this country needs a dead or unfairly imprisoned journalist to react against what is happening, but that is not my reality, I am not on my own”, she declared.
Finally the journalist affirmed that after giving it much thought, she had decided that the best was to leave the news program for some time, although she will continue directing the program 30 Plus and in charge of some special reports. She also reiterated that she has the TV station’s wholehearted support and thanked Minister of the Interior José Serrano for his offer to provide security, which she did not accept, she said, because it does not seem fair to her that a journalist should be surrounded by bodyguards to do her job.
Jeanette Hinostroza is the third journalist who has been forced to leave morning news programs in Ecuador. Jorge Ortiz, of the same TV station, left before her and so did Carlos Vera, of Ecuavisa. The morning time slot has traditionally been the space reserved for interviews, debate and political opinions.
