El 6 de enero de 2015, la periodista Manuela Picq, corresponsal de la cadena Al Jazeera y la revista digital Upsidedownworld fue agredida físicamente por policías, en el marco de la marcha indígena organizada por la Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (CONAIE) en Quito, en rechazo al anuncio gubernamental de retirar la sede de dicha organización.
En diálogo con Fundamedios, Picq narró que la agresión ocurrió cerca de las 17:00, cuando la marcha cruzaba el centro de Quito y logró pasar el cerco policial que se había conformado para, en un inicio, impedir el paso de los manifestantes. Tras esto, y una vez abierto el cerco, la periodista vio cómo policías agredían a un joven e intentó intervenir . Minutos después un uniformado se acercó y le echó gas pimienta a pocos centímetros de su rostro y boca. “Estaba tomando fotografías y lo creo que les molestó la presencia de cámaras, creo que la agresión fue un acto de retaliación por haber estado tomando fotografías”, apuntó Picq, quien analiza denunciar este hecho ante las autoridades.
En ese día, la Conaie congregó a cerca de 2000 miembros, quienes intentaron marchar hasta el palacio presidencial con el fin de pedir al gobierno que revea la decisión de retirar su sede que les fue entregada en comodato en 1991 y que se ha convertido en un símbolo para los indígenas.
Journalist is attacked with pepper spray while indigenous pacific march
On January 6, 2015 journalist Manuela Picq, a correspondent from Al Jazeera and digital magazine Upsidedownworld was physically assaulted by the police, she was on the indigenous march organized by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE) in Quito, rejecting the government’s announcement to withdraw the headquarters of the mentioned organization.
Speaking to Fundamedios, Picq narrated that the assault occurred around 17:00, when the march crossed the Quito´s down town and got through the police cordon that had been formed, at first, to prevent the passage of the demonstrators. After that, once the fence was open, Picq saw the police assaulting a young protestant and tried to intervene. Minutes later a cap came close to her and threw her pepper spray a few inches away from her face and mouth. «I was taking pictures and I think the presence of the cameras bothered them; I think the attack against me was an act of retaliation for having been taking pictures,» said Picq, who is willing to denounce the incident against the authorities.
On that day, the CONAIE brought together nearly 2000 members, who tried to march to the presidential palace to ask the government to review the decision of withdraw its headquarter which was handed to them as a loan in 1991 and has become a symbol for the Indigenous community.
