El 12 de noviembre de 2015, Andrés Mendoza, periodista de la Agencia Popular de Comunicación Ser Públicos, fue agredido físicamente por un policía mientras cubría las manifestaciones convocadas por varias organizaciones sociales en la ciudad porteña de Guayaquil. Mientras el periodista intentaba fotografiar la agresión a una mujer por parte de un elemento policial, fue impedido por un uniformado quien intentó quitarle su tableta, con la que estaba trabajando. “El periodista reacciona para evitar que le quiten su herramienta de trabajo, segundos después este elemento policial propina un cabezazo en el rostro, haciéndolo caer al suelo”, describe un boletín que envió la agencia sobre el hecho.
En los videos de la agresión que han sido subidos a Youtube, se puede ver al policía discutiendo con el comunicador y el momento en que este le propina un golpe con la cabeza, cubierta por un casco, lo que provoca que el periodista precipite al suelo.
La Agencia Popular de Comunicación -que forma parte de un proyecto del Observatorio Ciudadano de Servicios Públicos de Guayaquil que hace más de 10 años se dedica a proteger los derechos del consumidor y usuarios- repudió este hecho y anunció que iniciarán las acciones legales en contra del uniformado que agredió al periodista.
El 16 de noviembre la Fiscalía de Guayas receptó la denuncia de Mendoza. En su escrito, al que adjuntó videos de la agresión, señaló que fue agredido por el uniformado cuando cumplía sus funciones como parte del Observatorio de Servicios Sociales de Guayaquil .
Esta no es la primera vez que Mendoza es agredido en el contexto de protestas sociales, el pasado 13 de agosto de este año, Mendoza fue víctima de agresiones físicas producto de un objeto que fue lanzado por desconocidos y que provocó heridas en su oído izquierdo y en la vista. Este mismo periodista fue amenazado de muerte en mayo de este año, a través de un mensaje de correo electrónico que llegó a la cuenta institucional de la Agencia y a su cuenta personal de Facebook.
Journalist physically assaulted by policeman on day of protests
On 12 November 2015, Andrés Mendoza, journalist for the Popular Communications Agency ‘Ser Públicos’, was physically attacked by a police officer while covering demonstrations organized by various social organizations in the port city of Guayaquil. The reporter was attempting to photograph an attack against a woman by a member of the police, when a uniformed officer prevented him from doing this by attempting to take his tablet, with which he was working. «The journalist reacted to prevent his work tool from being taken from him, seconds later the police officer headbutted him, knocking him to the ground», described a bulletin sent by the agency about the event.
In videos of the aggression that have been uploaded to Youtube, the policeman can be seen arguing with the communicator and then hitting him with the head, which was covered by a helmet, causing the journalist to fall to the ground.
The Popular Communication Agency – which is part of a project of the Citizen Observatory of Public Services of Guayaquil, which for over 10 years has been dedicated to protecting the rights of consumers and users – condemned this event and announced that it will initiate legal actions against the police officer who attacked the journalist.
On 16 November the Prosecutor’s Office of Guayas accepted Mendoza’s complaint. In the document, to which he attached videos of the aggression, he stated that he was attacked by the policeman while operating as part of the Observatory of Social Services of Guayaquil.
This is not the first time that Mendoza has been attacked in the context of social protests. On 13 August this year, Mendoza was a victim of a physical attack by unidentified persons who threw an object at him causing injuries to his left ear and his eyes. The journalist was also threatened to death in May this year through an email that arrived at the Agency’s institutional account and his personal Facebook account.
