El jueves 2 de diciembre de 2010 Guido Manolo Campaña, periodista deportivo de diario El Universo, permaneció secuestrado durante casi siete horas mientras se encontraba realizando una investigación en la región costera de Esmeraldas, ubicada a 318 Km al noroccidente de Quito. Durante ese tiempo el periodista fue golpeado sistemáticamente y amenazado de muerte.
El periodista estaba investigando una supuesta suplantación de identidad que involucra a un futbolista de Liga de Quito, a partir de una denuncia llegada a este medio. Campaña había viajado a la localidad de Muisne y estaba de regreso a la capital provincial de Esmeraldas cuando el autobús en que viajaba fue interceptado por un vehículo de color blanco, del que descendieron dos personas armadas con pistolas. Los secuestradores abordaron la unidad y advirtieron a los pasajeros que no intervengan al expresar: «No es con ustedes», y apuntando al periodista deportivo le ordenaron, entre insultos, bajar, y junto a otros dos cómplices, que esperaban en el auto, partieron con destino desconocido.
Los plagiadores lo llevaron hasta una vivienda donde lo ataron, golpearon y amenazaron. Luego de seis horas, y, tras llegar a un acuerdo telefónico con funcionarios del rotativo lo dejaron en libertad.
Durante el tiempo que permaneció secuestrado, los desconocidos le exigieron al periodista que revele quién le dio la información para iniciar con la investigación que pretendía llevar a cabo y que estaba relacionada con la presunta suplantación de identidad de un futbolista profesional que milita en el club Liga Deportiva Universitaria.
Además de exigirle información, los secuestradores le quitaron su cámara fotográfica, la grabadora, el teléfono celular y la libreta que contenía todos los apuntes relacionados a la investigación. Todos estas herramientas de trabajo fueron destruidas.
También le advirtieron que lo matarían y atentarían contra su familia si se hacía pública la investigación, empezada a partir de una denuncia que llegó al rotativo .
Ni el periodista ni su familia cuentan hasta el momento con protección ni seguridad policial.
Fundamedios recuerda que es obligación del Estado brindar protección efectiva a los ciudadanos y en especial a quienes ejercen profesionalmente su libertad de expresión como es el caso de los periodistas. Por esa razón exhortamos a las autoridades a que brinden las medidas de protección más adecuadas para el periodista.
Journalist was kidnapped and is threatened
On Thursday 2 December 2010, Guido Manolo Campaña, sports writer for the newspaper El Universo, was kidnapped and retained for nearly seven hours when he was working on an investigation in the coastal region of Esmeraldas, 318 km northeast of Quito. During that time the journalist was beaten systematically and threatened to death.
The journalist was investigating an alleged identity theft involving a Liga de Quito football player after the newspaper received information about the fact. Campaña had travelled to the town of Muisne and was on his way back to the provincial capital of Esmeraldas when the bus in which he was travelling was intercepted by a white car from which two persons armed with guns emerged. The kidnappers got onto the bus and warned the passengers not to intervene by saying: «This does not involve you». Aiming their guns at the journalist while insulting him at the same time, they ordered Campaña to get out of the bus and, with two accomplices who were waiting in the car, left for an unknown destination.
The abductors took him to a house where they tied, beat and threatened him. They let him go six hours later, after reaching an agreement through the phone with El Universo staff.
During the time he remained kidnapped, the unidentified criminals demanded that the journalist should reveal who gave him the information that led to his investigation, which concerned an alleged identity theft by a professional football player who is a member of the club Liga Deportiva Universitaria.
As well as demanding information, the kidnappers took Campaña’s camera, voice recorder, cellular phone and a booklet with all his notes about the investigation. All these working tools were destroyed.
They also warned him that they would kill him and attempt against his family if the investigation was made public.
Neither the journalist nor his family have been provided with protection so far.
Fundamedios reminds the State that it is its obligation to provide effective protection to its citizens, especially for those who exercise professionally the freedom of expression, as is the case of journalists. For this reason we exhort the authorities to provide the journalist with the most adequate measures for his protection.
