El jueves 10 de noviembre de 2011, el periodista Christian Zurita fue presuntamente drogado con una sustancia conocida como escopolamina. Este alcaloide, que se deriva de plantas de la familia de solanáceas, hace que la persona pierda el conocimiento y la voluntad de sus acciones y normalmente es utilizada por delincuentes para robar a sus víctimas. Sin embargo, las pertenencias de Zurita estaban intactas.
El periodista narró que desde muy temprano estaba realizando unos trámites en el edificio del seguro social y que tuvo conciencia de todo hasta las 10 de la mañana. Sin embargo, los recuerdos de las horas posteriores son muy confusos.
Zurita, quien actualmente labora en diario El Universo y afronta un juicio por daño moral con el presidente Rafael Correa, por la co autoría del libro «El Gran Hermano», dijo que lo único que recuerda es que se acercó a una de las cabinas de Internet sobre las 10:30 de la mañana y luego sintió mareos y confusión. También que un individuo le inducía a algo y, de los 300$ que tenía en sus manos, se percató después que le quedaban $250, pero sus demás pertenencias estaban intactas y comprobó que tampoco había realizado ninguna transacción en los bancos.
«Entiendo que fui conduciendo hasta el diario sobre las 13:00, pero no se ni cómo llegué hasta ahí. Solo se que una vez dentro del estacionamiento me he quedado dormido y mis compañeros me encontraron sobre las 18:00 y me llevaron a casa y luego al hospital», dice Zurita.
El periodista permaneció unas horas bajo observación en el hospital Voz Andes de Quito y, tras realizarle unas pruebas, no encontraron rastro de otros narcóticos. «Me dijeron que lo más seguro es que se trató de escopolamina, por la forma en cómo pasó todo, pero lamentablemente no se pudo confirmar porque en ese hospital no podían hacerme la prueba de esa sustancia específica».
Semanas atrás el periodista Juan Carlos Calderón, el otro autor del libro «El Gran Hermano», recibió amenazas telefónicas de un desconocido quien le dijo que «ponga las barbas en remojo porque él sería el siguiente». Ambos periodistas acudieron el pasado 25 de octubre hasta Washington DC, en calidad de víctimas, para denunciar su situación en la audiencia sobre la Situación de Libertad de Expresión en Ecuador, ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos CIDH.
Directivos de Fundamedios, también peticionarios ante la CIDH, han recibido amenazas contra su integridad, ante lo cual el Estado habría ordenado que se refuerce su seguridad.
Ayer en la noche el Gobierno a través del Subsecretario de Seguridad, Leonardo Berrezueta, el Director de Inteligencia de la Policía, General Luis Tamayo y el Secretario de Comunicación, Fernando Alvarado dieron a conocer esta medida .
Fundamedios agradece al Gobierno nacional este acto, pero deplora que se haya destacado esta noticia sin previo aviso a los afectados. Consideramos que todo asunto relacionado con la integridad personal debería ser tratado de forma seria y reservada por el Gobierno y no darle una entonación política. Con el uso del tema, se desvaloriza cualquier medida de protección que se haya querido establecer por parte del Estado.
También, señalamos que las amenazas han sido reportadas a la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos, CIDH, dado que son violatorias del artículo 63 de su reglamento, al haber sido desatadas por la serie de cadenas nacionales que el Gobierno ecuatoriano ordenó en represalia por nuestra comparencia ante el seno del más alto organismo de protección de derechos humanos que tiene el continente.
Journalist who appeared before the iachr suffers attempted assault
On Thursday 10 November 2011, journalist Christian Zurita was presumably drugged with a substance known as scopolamine. This alkaloid, derived from plants of the Solanaceae family (nightshades), causes a person to lose consciousness and the power to control their actions. It is normally used by criminals to rob their victims. However, Zurita’s belongings were not taken.
The journalist declared that he had been doing some paperwork from very early on in the social security building and that he can remember everything clearly until 10 am. His recollection of later hours, however, is very hazy.
Zurita, who currently works for the newspaper El Universo and is facing a lawsuit for moral damage filed by President Rafael Correa for the co-authorship of the book “El Gran Hermano”, said that the only thing he remembers is that he approached an Internet cabin around 10:30 am and from that moment on started to feel dizzy and confused. Also, that a man was trying to persuade him to do something and that he realized he had only $250 left of the $300 he had had in his hands. He had all the rest of his belongings with him and he later verified that he had not carried out any transactions in banks.
“I understand I drove to the newspaper around 1 pm, but I don’t know how I got there. I only know that once inside the parking lot I fell asleep and my colleagues found me around 6 pm. They took me home and then to the hospital”, he said.
The journalist remained under observation for a few hours in Quito Hospital Voz Andes. The tests carried out showed no traces of other narcotics. “I was told it was most probably scopolamine, because of the way in which things developed. Unfortunately they were not able to confirm this because the hospital did not have a test for that particular substance”.
A few weeks earlier, journalist Juan Carlos Calderón, the other author of the book “El Gran Hermano” had receives telephone threats from an unidentified person who told him to “get ready because he would be next”.Both journalists attended, on 25 October, the Hearing about the situation of the freedom of expression in Ecuador before the Inter American Commission on Human Rights IACHR in Washington DC. They went there as victims to denounce their situation.
Fundamedios executive officials, who were also petitioners before the IACHR, have also received threats against their integrity. The State has ordered their security to be tightened.
The Government made this measure known last night through the Sub-secretary of Security, Leonardo Berrezueta, the Police’s Director of Intelligence, General Luis Tamayo, and the Secretary of Communication, Fernando Alvarado.
Fundamedios thanks the national government for this action, but regrets that the measure was announced without letting those affected by it know first. We believe that every issue concerning personal integrity should be treated seriously and privately by the government, without using it politically. By doing this, any protective measure the State wanted to establish is devalued.
Moreover, the threats have been reported to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, IACHR, since they infringe article 63 of its regulations because they were triggered by the series of national ‘chain’ programs that the Ecuadorian government ordered in reprisal against our appearance before the continent’s highest organization for the protection of human rights.
