El 24 de octubre de 2010, Luis Mier, periodista de radio Premier; Leonardo Yépez, director de radio América y Nancy Valdivieso, reportera del canal TVN fueron agredidos verbalmente y expulsados del Sindicato de Choferes de Imbabura, en la ciudad de Ibarra – ubicada a 120 Kms de Quito- en donde se mantenía una reunión de carácter público, por las paralizaciones de transporte suscitadas en los últimos días.
Yépez y Mier relataron que fueron insultados y posteriormente fueron sacados del sitio por dos empleados del sindicato, quienes le advirtieron que si no salían, se suspendería la reunión . Nancy Valdivieso y su camarógrafo Diego Martínez corroboraron esta versión y afirmaron que en esa reunión fueron abucheados por un grupo de transportistas, quienes les gritaron «afuera», «afuera», pero no lograron identificarlos.
Jorge Lozano, presidente de la Unión Provincial de Taxistas de Imbabura justificó lo sucedido y dijo que existen periodistas que parecen que están en contra del pueblo y que a ello, quizás, se deban los insultos al director de la radio América. «Deben ser un poco más prudentes», añadió.
Journalists verbally attacked during drivers’ union meeting
On 24 October 2010, Luis Mier, a journalist for radio station Premier; Leonardo Yépez, director of Radio América; and Nacy Valdivieso, a reporter for TV station TVN, were verbally attacked and expelled from the headquarters of Imbabura’s Drivers Union, in the city of Ibarra – 120 kms from Quito – where a public meeting was being held to talk about the transport strikes that had been promoted during previous days.
Yépez and Mier declared that they were insulted and escorted out of the premises by two union members who warned them that if they did not leave, the meeting would be suspended. Nancy Valdivieso and her camera operator, Diego Martínez, corroborated this version of events and stated that they were jeered at by a group of transport workers who shouted «get out», «get out» at them, but whom they could not recognize.
Jorge Lozano, president of Imbabura’s Provincial Taxi Drivers’ Union, justified the events saying some journalists seem to be against the people, and that this may have been the cause of the insults against Radio América’s director. «They should be a bit more prudent», he added.
