El 20 de marzo de 2012, periodistas de medios privados fueron impedidos de realizar la cobertura de la firma de un convenio en el Palacio presidencial y, posteriormente, una de las reporteras fue agredida verbalmente por simpatizantes del Gobierno, en las inmediaciones de la Plaza de la Independencia, Centro Histórico de Quito.
Ana María Cañizares, periodista de la estación televisiva Teleamazonas narró a FUNDAMEDIOS que recibió un boletín de prensa sobre la firma de un convenio entre el Ministerio Coordinador de la Política y la comunidad Shuar. Sin embargo, cuando llegó a cubrir dicho evento, le impidieron su ingreso porque supuestamente «no constaba en la lista de acreditados», según le había indicado una funcionaria de la Secretaría Administrativa de la Presidencia.
Esto sorprendió a Cañizares y a periodistas de otros medios privados como El Comercio, El Universo, Expreso y radio Quito, puesto que aseguraron que nunca antes habían necesitado de una acreditación especial para cubrir esa fuente.
La periodista de El Comercio, quién pidió la reserva de su nombre, aseguró que después de que se le impidió la cobertura de la firma del convenio, se dirigió hacia los bajos del Palacio para entrevistar a los simpatizantes del Gobierno que se habían congregado en la Plaza de independencia . No obstante, fue insultada e intimidada por dos simpatizantes de Gobierno que portaban banderas del movimiento político oficialista, Alianza País.
La reportera narró que uno de ellos comenzó a tomarle fotografías, pero tras pedirle que no lo hiciera, la volvió a insultar. «Me llamó mentirosa, falsa porque me tapaba para que no me sacara fotografías», comentó la periodista.
Los otros periodistas que estaban en el lugar acudieron en auxilio de la reportera de El Comercio y pidieron calma a los simpatizantes del Gobierno. Sin embargo, uno de ellos siguió insultándolos y, según los testimonios, pateó a un ciudadano que salió en defensa de los comunicadores.
Journalists prevented from covering official act and then insulted by government sympathizers
On 20 March 2012, private media journalists were prevented from covering the signing of an agreement in the presidential palace. Afterwards, one of the reporters was verbally attacked by government sympathizers in the vicinity of Independence Square, in Quito’s historical center.
Teleamazonas journalist Ana MaríaCañizares told FUNDAMEDIOS that she received a press bulletin about the signing of an agreement between the Ministry in charge of Coordinating Policy and the Shuar community. When she arrived to cover the event, however, she was prevented from entering because she allegedly “did not appear in the list of accredited (journalists)”, according to an official of the Presidency’s Administrative Department.
This surprised Cañizares and journalists of other private media, including El Comercio, El Universo, Expreso and Radio Quito. They stated that they had never before needed special accreditation to cover that source.
A journalist who works for El Comercio, who asked not to reveal her name, asserted that after she was prevented from covering the signing of the agreement, she went to the palace’s lower floor to interview government sympathizers who had gathered in Independence Square. There she was insulted and intimidated by two government sympathizers who carried banners of the government political movement, Alianza País.
The reporter declared that one of them started taking her picture and insulted her againwhen she asked him not to do it.“He called me liar, false because I was covering myself so he wouldn’t take my picture”, commented the journalist.
Other reporters who were in the area went in her aid and requested the government sympathizers to stay calm.One of them, however, continued insulting them and according to the journalists’ declarations, kicked another man who attempted to defend the communicators.
