Los periodistas Juan Carlos Calderón, ex editor de Diario Expreso, y Christian Zurita, actual editor de investigación del medio, han sido víctimas de una serie de descalificaciones e insultos inmediatamente después de la publicación del libro «El Gran Hermano», que contiene una amplia investigación periodística sobre los contratos de Fabricio Correa, hermano del Presidente de la República, con el Estado ecuatoriano.
Con fecha 1 de septiembre, los autores y Editorial Paradiso, editores de la obra, recibieron una carta de María de los Ángeles Duarte, Ministra de Transporte y Obras Públicas, que cuestiona un pie de una foto incluida en el libro que menciona su gestión en la concesión de un contrato al hermano del Presidente porque a su juicio es «erróneo» y «carece de sustento y veracidad». Duarte en su carta exige la rectificación de la afirmación antes referida y pide que «se retire de circulación el libro, así como también abstenerse de publicar una fotografía con un texto que difiere de la realidad de los hechos». Finalmente, la ministra señala que «en caso de no proceder a la inmediata rectificación, me reservo el derecho de ejercer las acciones legales que me asisten.»
Los autores del libro afirman que todo lo publicado es verdad y que su investigación tiene los debidos sustentos, por lo que negaron ofensa alguna con «malicia».
El pasado lunes 6 de septiembre Gama TV, canal incautado por el Estado, transmitió un programa especial de más de una hora de duración denominado «Investigación Periodística en Análisis». El programa fue el espacio para que dos altos funcionarios de Gobierno: Alexis Mera, Secretario Jurídico de la Presidencia, y Galo Mora, Secretario Particular del Presidente de la República, descalificaran la investigación periodística.
Mera afirmó que el libro, en términos jurídicos, es una «basura completa» y calificó a los periodistas de «farsantes». Mora por su parte, expresó que existe «evidentemente una posición política en contra de la revolución ciudadana» y añadió que se ha afectado la figura del Presidente y se ha desestimado su condición humana .
El lunes 13 de septiembre, en una entrevista realizada por la cadena televisiva Ecuavisa, Alexis Mera volvió a arremeter contra los periodistas calificándolos de tener una «actitud perversa y politizada». Además los tachó de «mentirosos» y «miserables» y amenazó por tres ocasiones con «llamar a los periodistas a declarar». No obstante abogados consultados por Fundamedios señalan que el Secretario Jurídico de la Presidencia no tiene calidad alguna de Juez o de Fiscal como para pedir directamente declaraciones judiciales de los periodistas.
Journalists subjected to insults and harassment after publishing investigative book
(Fundamedios/IFEX) – Journalists Juan Carlos Calderón, former editor of newspaper «Diario Expreso», and Christian Zurita, current investigations editor of the same paper, have been subjected to a series of discrediting comments and insults. These began immediately after the publication of the book «El Gran Hermano», which includes an in-depth investigation about the contracts of Fabricio Correa, the Ecuadorian president’s brother, with the State.
On 1 September 2010, the authors and their publisher, Editorial Paradiso, received a letter written by María de los Ángeles Duarte, Minister of Transport and Public Works. In the letter, the minister questioned the caption of a photograph included in the book, which mentions her part in the concession of a contract to the president’s brother, which in Duarte’s opinion is «erroneous» and «unsubstantiated». Duarte demanded that the caption be changed and requested that «the book be withdrawn from circulation, and they should abstain from publishing photographs with captions that do not correspond to the events». Finally, the minister stated that «if the information is not immediately corrected, I reserve the right to resort to legal action».
The book’s authors claim that everything that was included in the book is true and that their investigation is backed by evidence. They dismissed the accusation that they had offended anyone with «malice».
On 6 September, Gama TV, a station that was seized by the State, broadcast a special program, more than an hour long, titled «Journalistic Investigation under Analysis». The program provided an opportunity for two high-ranking state officials – Alexis Mera, the Presidency’s Legal Secretary, and Galo Mora, Personal Secretary to the President – to discredit the journalistic investigation. Mera stated that the book is, in legal terms, «complete rubbish» and that the journalists are «frauds». Mora said that an «evidently political position against the citizens’ revolution» colours the book and that the president’s status and reputation has been affected.
On 13 September, during an interview carried out by Ecuavisa TV network, Mera attacked the journalists once again, saying they have a «perverse and politicized attitude». He also called them «liars» and «despicable» and threatened on three occasions to summon the journalists. However, lawyers consulted by Fundamedios have said that the Presidency’s Legal Secretary is neither a judge nor a prosecutor and, therefore, cannot request legal declarations from the journalists.
