El domingo 16 de junio del 2013, un policía arrebató el equipo fotográfico a Edwin Loor, reportero del periódico El Diario, en la ciudad de Portoviejo, ubicada a 355 Km de Quito. El gendarme borró las imágenes captadas durante un incidente callejero.
Loor narró que esa noche debió cubrir de urgencia hechos violentos ocurridos en la ciudadela San Cristóbal de Portoviejo, originados por el asesinato a un ciudadano. Cuando captaba imágenes de un automóvil que había sido incendiado en la calle por un grupo de moradores, un policía, al que no identificó, se acercó y le arrebató la cámara fotográfica. Loor dijo que eso ocurrió sin una advertencia previa y que la única explicación que le dio el uniformado fue que no podía tomar fotos en ese lugar .
El agente también se justificó diciendo que el comunicador no llevaba su credencial de trabajo y restó importancia al hecho de que el periodista estuviera junto al vehículo de coberturas que tiene los logotipos de la empresa de comunicación donde labora.
Loor acudió a los jefes policiales para dar a conocer lo sucedió, tras lo cual la cámara le fue devuelta, pero las fotografías ya habían sido borradas de la memoria del equipo.
El comunicador aseguró que en ningún momento le dieron una explicación de lo ocurrido, pese a que lo solicitó.
Police officer seizes camera from journalist and deletes photographs of violent incidents
On Sunday, June 16, 2013, a member of the pólice forces took the photographic equipment that Edwin Loor, graphic reporter from El Diario(Portoviejo; 355km from Quito), The police man deleted some photographs of a public manifestation that had been captures by Loor.
Loor indicated that he was covering the violent murder of a person in San Cristobal. When he was photographing a vehicle that had been set on fire by some nearby residents, an unidentified policeman snatched his camera from him without any warning. The police officer only told him that he was not allowed to take pictures in that place.
Later, the police agent tried to explain these actions indicating that at the time of the incidentLoor did not have his credentials on him, while ignoring the fact that the journalist had been standing next to the network´s vehicle, which had its logo on it.
Loor told these incidents to the police chiefs in the area. While the camera was returned to him, the pictures he took had been deleted. The journalist said that the police officer never gave him a reasonable explanation for his behavior, even when he requested so.
