El domingo 19 de mayo de 2013, Diego Orellana, camarógrafo de la estación televisiva local Megavisión, fue detenido y agredido físicamente por policías mientras cubría los disturbios protagonizados por hinchas del equipo de fútbol Emelec, al final de un partido con un equipo rival en la localidad de Quinindé, ubicada a 318 Km al norte de Quito. Durante el incidente, los gendarmes también le arrebataron elmaterial periodístico contenido en la cámara.
Orellana narró a Fundamedios que permaneció detenido por aproximadamente cinco horas sin que la policía le haya dado un motivo ni explicación alguna de su detención. Además, aseguró que tampoco justificaron la desaparición de la cinta de vídeo que contenía las imágenes de los disturbios de los hinchas y la actuación de la fuerza pública para dispersar el tumulto y las grescas que, de acuerdo a publicaciones recogidas por varios medios escritos, dejaron un saldo de varios heridos y seis detenidos.
“Cuando un policía se dio cuenta que estaba grabando, se me acercó de frente y me dijo que no grabara, cubrió con su mano la cámara y otro policía me roció gas pimienta”. Tras esto, el camarógrafo comentó que entrevistaba a los hinchas, quienes daban sus testimonios de supuestos abusos cometidos por la policía, minutos después, otro oficial de policía se acercó a Orellana quien le exigió que se identificara y una vez que Orellana le explicó que en ese momento no tenía su cédula, pero que estaba cubriendo los hechos ordenó que “lo saquen de ahí” .
“Vino un policía, me dio un golpe para meterme al patrullero, peor que si fuera un delincuente y en plena vía”, dijo Orellana, quien comentó que una vez en los patios de la policía le retiraron su cámara la cual después de su liberación, cerca de la medianoche, le fue entregada, pero sin la cinta de vídeo, que según elcamarógrafo, contenía “material comprometedor” e incluso la grabación del audio del momento en que era conducido en la patrulla policial.
Orellana afirmó que la policía le tomó sus datos. Sin embargo, su nombre nunca figuró en el parte emitido esa noche.
Police detain camera operator and take journalistic material
On Sunday 19 May 2013, Diego Orellana, camera operator for the local TV station Megavisión, was arrested and physically attacked by police officers while covering rioting fans of the Emelec football team at the end of a match with a rival team in the locality of Quinindé, 318 km north of Quito.During the incident, the policemen also seized the journalistic material that was in his camera.
Orellana told Fundamedios that he was detained for about five hours without being given a reason or an explanation.He also stated that the policemen did not justify the disappearance of the videotape containing images of the fans rioting and the actions of the police to disperse the public and stop the fights that, according to several written media outlets, left several people wounded while six were detained.
«When a police officer realized I was recording, he approached me, told me not to tape and covered the camera with his hand while another officer pepper sprayed me”.The camera operator said he was interviewing fans who were telling him of alleged abuses committed by the police. Minutes later another police officer approached Orellana and demanded to see an identification card. When the cameraman explained he did not have one with him at the time but was covering the events, the officer ordered to «get him out of there”.
«A policeman came and hit me to get me in into the patrol car, worse than if I were a criminal and on the street”, said Orellana, who added that once inside the police courtyard they took his camera. It was returned to him after his release around midnight, but without the videotape that, according to the camera operator, contained «compromising material» and even the audio recording of the time when he was being taken in the patrol car.
Orellana said the police asked for his personal information.However, his name did not appear in the official notice issued that night.
