El 3 de mayo de 2014, el presidente Rafael Correa durante el Enlace Ciudadano N° 372, tildó a diario Hoy de ser un medio “irresponsable”, “de lo peor” y sin escrúpulos, por supuestamente haber manipulado declaraciones suyas en un titular con el fin de “hacer daño” y “para ver si de repente le pegan un balazo al Presidente”.
El Jefe de Estado cuestionó un titular publicado por el medio, a propósito de unas declaraciones sobre el caso de Cléver Jiménez, Fernando Villavicencio y Carlos Figueroa, quienes se encontrarían refugiados en una comunidad de Sarayacu tras ser sentenciados a prisión por injuriarlo. Al respecto señaló: “Es terrible lo que está pasando y veamos qué dice el Presidente y qué publica diario Hoy para resolver el conflicto, para ver si le pegan un tiro al presidente. Veamos qué clase de prensa enfrentamos día a día».
Tras esto se presentó un video cuya voz en off indicó que el titular ‘Aquí no hay que negociar nada, hay que hacerles respetar la autoridad’, del diario y que cita al Presidente “es falso” y “trastoca” las declaraciones dadas por este en un conversatorio con los medios. Según ese mismo video, las declaraciones del Primer Mandatario fueron las siguientes: «Y por supuesto no se puede ceder ante esta barbaridad. Sería un precedente nefasto. Aquí no hay que negociar nada. Lo que hay que hacer es respetar el Estado de derecho, respetar la autoridad legítimamente constituida. Hay que respetar una sentencia de los tribunales del Ecuador”.
En ese sentido, la voz en off del video aseguró que “el periódico con mala fe manipuló las declaraciones del presidente para dar un sentido diferente al mensaje presidencial y provocar así reacciones negativas. No es la primera vez que con descaro lo hace. Son innumerables las descontextualizaciones y manipulaciones de diario Hoy y siempre apuntando al presidente Correa. Este diario, incluso días antes al 30 de septiembre, publicaba toda clase de pasquines que asustaban a la policía. Por eso no nos llama la atención que esta sea una más de las mentiras comprobadas al diario Hoy” .
Luego del video, el Primer Mandatario volvió a descalificar al medio e insistir en que este quiere hacerle daño: “Son unos irresponsables diario Hoy con diario La Hora. Son de lo peor. Ya es una deshonestidad sin límites. Claro que después corrigieron, los obligamos a corregir, pero corrigieron mal además. Claro que el daño ya estaba hecho y a ver si le pegan un tiro al presidente después de rasgarse las vestiduras y llamar a la paz y a la armonía. Esa es la hipocresía de esta prensa corrupta, y diario Hoy con diario La Hora son de lo peor ¡Terribles! Ya han perdido todo escrúpulo” concluyó.
President accuses a journal of manipulation to see if he “could get shot”
May 3, 2014, President Rafael Correa during his Broadcast N ° 372, labeled Hoy Journal for being an «irresponsible», the «worst» and an unscrupulous media, for supposedly manipulated his statements on the newspapers headline with the attempt of «harm» and «to see” if suddenly the President gets shot.»

According to the same video, the statements of the Head of State were: «And of course we cannot yield in to this outrageous. It would be an ominous precedent. There is nothing to negotiate. We must respect the rule of law, respect the legitimately constituted authorities. We must respect a final ruling of the Ecuadorian courts.
The voice on off of the video held that «the newspaper with bad faith manipulated the President statements to give different meaning to the Presidential messages and cause negative reactions. It is not the first time they do it shamelessly. There are countless the news out of context and manipulations from Hoy Journal and always pointing the President Correa. This journal, even days before September 30, published all the lampoons that scared the police. Why isn’t calling our attention that this is just one more of the lies from Hoy Journal. «
After the video, the President continued disqualifying the media and insisted that the Journal wants to hurt him: «Hoy Journal is irresponsible with newspaper La Hora. They are the worst. It is anendless dishonesty. Of course, they corrected after, we made them correct but they corrected wrong.Of course the damage was done and let’s see if the president gets shot after tearing his clothesapart and request for peace and harmony. That’s the hypocrisy of this corrupt press, HoyJournal and La Hora newspaper are the worst¡They are Terrible! They had lost all scruples » The President concluded.
