El domingo 12 de mayo de 2013, el periodista y director ejecutivo de la Asociación Ecuatoriana de Editores de Periódicos, AEDEP, Diego Cornejo, fue amenazado por un desconocido, mientras caminaba por un parque en el norte de la ciudad de Quito. En horas de la mañana, un individuo de alrededor de 50 años se acercó a Cornejo y apuntándole con el dedo índice le dijo: «La ciudadanía le tenemos bien visto a usted». El periodista reaccionó preguntando si se trataba de una amenaza, y el hombre enfadado le respondió «Correa es el mejor presidente que hemos tenido». Cornejo volvió a preguntar si lo estaba amenazando, pero el sujeto siguió su camino.
En horas de la tarde Cornejo recibió un mensaje de su cuenta de correo electrónico indicando: «Alguien ha utilizado una aplicación para intentar iniciar sesión de tu cuenta (…) Si no reconoces este intento de inicio de sesión es posible que alguien esté intentando acceder a tu cuenta.» La dirección IP enviada en el mensaje no corresponde a ninguna desde las cuales el periodista accede a sus correos electrónicos.
El pasado 04 de mayo durante el enlace sabatino del Presidente Correa, en el segmento «la caretucada de la semana», se presentaron declaraciones de Diego Cornejo descontextualizadas y editadas . Según el espacio oficial, Cornejo al referirse al Informe de la Relatoría Especial para la Libertad de Expresión habría indicado que las fuentes del mismo son «Fundamedios, la UNP y AEDEP».
Según el audio completo de la entrevista radial, Cornejo señaló que las fuentes utilizadas por la Relatoría Especial para la Libertad de Expresión en su Informe son «Fundamedios, AEDEP, la UNP, por el Colegio de Periodistas, por algunas víctimas, independientemente, periodistas, personas naturales que han concurrido con sus denuncias, por periódicos, por un colectivo muy amplio, muy grande, es un registro de las noticias que se publican, todo eso constituye la documentación que respalda el informe.»
President of private media association is threatened and there is an attempt to hack his mail account
On Sunday 12 May 2013, journalist and executive director of the Ecuadorian Association of Newspaper Editors, AEDEP, Diego Cornejo, was threatened by an unidentified person while walking through a park in northern Quito.In the morning, a man about 50 years old approached Cornejo and pointing at him with his finger said:“The public is keeping an eye on you”.The journalist reacted asking if this was a threat and the man angrily replied «Correa is the best president we’ve ever had”.Cornejo asked again if he was being threatened, but the man just kept walking.
In the afternoon Cornejo received a message from his email account that stated:»Someone recently tried to use an application to sign into your account (…)If you do not recognize this sign-in attempt, someone else might be trying to access your account”.The IP address sent in the message did not match any of the addresses from which the journalist accesses his emails.
On 4 May during President Correa’s Saturday program, in the segment «the impertinence of the week», some out of context and edited declarations made by Diego Cornejo were presented.According to the official program, when referring to the Report of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression, Cornejo stated that its sources are «Fundamedios, the UNP and AEDEP».
When broadcasted in full, the radio interview makes it clear that Cornejo said the sources used by the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression in its report are «Fundamedios, AEDEP, the UNP, the Association of Journalists, some victims, journalists talking independently, natural persons who have attended with their complaints, newspapers, a very large group, very large, it is a record of the news that are published, all of this is part of the documentation on which the report is based”.
