El 26 de febrero de 2011, el presidente de la República, Rafael Correa tildó a diario El Universo de «conspirador», «irresponsable» y que trata de «sembrar cizaña» por, supuestamente», emprender una campaña para indisponer a los miembros de la Policía contra el Gobierno, tras publicar lo que, el Mandatario calificó de rumores y declaraciones sacadas de contexto, por futuros cambios que el ejecutivo emprenderá en la estructura policial.
Durante su Enlace Ciudadano Nº210, desarrollado en Quito, el Jefe de Estado reiteró sus críticas en contra de la prensa, los medios y periodistas. Parte de sus declaraciones estuvieron llenas de calificativos como «prensa corrupta»; «amarillista» y «manipuladora» en donde el Mandatario aprovechó para comparar hechos históricos como el trágico asesinato al Presidente Eloy Alfaro y aludir a que esta desgracia se dio por culpa de la manipulación de esa prensa.
«Hay una prensa conspiradora irresponsable, que no le interesa que tengamos a 200 muertos con tal de que se caiga el gobierno. Así, tratan de indisponer a la policía en contra del Gobierno», dijo Rafael Correa.
Enseguida, el Mandatario se refirió a diario El Universo e hizo la siguiente advertencia: «Compañeros policías tengan mucho cuidado porque, sobretodo, estos irresponsables de diario El Universo están tratando de indisponer a la policía contra el gobierno, están sacando de contexto declaraciones del Ministro de Seguridad, o difundiendo rumores, por ejemplo, que se va a acabar la policía judicial…».
Posteriormente recordó los hechos del pasado 30 de septiembre (fecha de la sublevación policial) y dijo: «hay una prensa corrupta irresponsable que trata de sembrar cizaña y decir que la policía judicial se va a eliminar, para de esa forma, ver si ocurre otro 30 de septiembre; a ver si esta vez sí matan al presidente… y se rasgarán las vestiduras y dirán que es el barbarismo ¡No! son ustedes criminales como hicieron con Eloy Alfaro, esa prensa amarillista irresponsable que manipula conspira y conspira. No sean hipócritas el pueblo ecuatoriano sabe bien discernir aquello».
President of the republic accusses newspaper of conspiring to topple the government
On 26 February 2011, President of the Republic Rafael Correa called the newspaper El Universo a «conspirator» and «irresponsible», stating that it is attempting to «sow discord» by allegedly initiating a campaign to indispose the members of the Police against the government after publishing what the Chief of State classified as rumors and declarations taken out of context about future changes in the Police Department’s structure by the executive.
During his program Enlace Ciudadano 210, broadcasted from Quito, the President repeated his criticisms of the press, the media and journalists. Parts of his declarations were riddled by epithets such as «corrupt press», «sensationalist» and «manipulative». He also mentioned historical events such as the tragic assassination of President Eloy Alfaro and suggested that this tragedy was caused by the manipulation of that press.
«There is an irresponsible and conspiratorial press that does not care if we have 200 dead as long as the government falls. So they attempt to indispose the Police against the government», he said.
Correa then went on to mention the newspaper El Universo and issued the following warning: «Comrade policemen be very careful because, especially, these irresponsible (journalists) of the newspaper El Universo are attempting to indispose the Police against the government, are taking the Minister for Security’s declarations out of context, or spreading rumors, for example, that there will be no more judicial police…».
He later remembered the events of 30 September (date of the Police uprising) and said: «there is a corrupt irresponsible press that tries to sow discord and says that the judicial Police will be eliminated, attempting to create another 30 of September; to see if this time they do kill the president … and they will tear their clothes and say it’s barbarism. No! You are criminals behaving like you did with Eloy Alfaro, that sensationalist irresponsible press that manipulates, conspires and conspires. Don’t be hypocrites, the Ecuadorian people can perceive this clearly».
