El 12 de julio de 2011, el presidente Rafael Correa anunció que tiene la decisión de combatir lo que llama»las mentiras de la prensa» y aseguró que eso «tal vez este sea mi mejor legado».
Añadió que con la nueva Ley de Comunicación, se combatirá a «los sicarios de tinta» que «mienten, mienten y mienten, disfrazados de periodistas, que no ganan ni las elecciones de su barrio, hacen política ilegítimamente».
«¿Es que, por ser medios privados, pueden publicar u omitir lo que quieran? Eso no es ético», dice el Presidente de la República y aseguró que cuando le llegué a su despacho el proyecto de Ley de Comunicación lo revisará y vetará lo que crea necesario.
Respecto al juicio planteado y a la reciente renuncia del articulista Emilio Palacio del diario El Universo dijo que la demanda se mantiene y que la dimisión del articulista es un hecho aislado y recalcó que a Palacio se le solicitó que rectifique las mentiras y aseveraciones calumniosas que incluyó en uno de sus artículos y de ninguna manera se pidió su separación . «No voy a permitir que se juegue con asuntos tan sagrados como el 30 de septiembre», enfatizó Rafael Correa.
El articulista Emilio Palacio renunció irrevocablemente a Diario El Universo señalando que esperaba que su salida del Diario sea motivo para que el Presidente Correa y sus abogados retiuraran la demanda por 80 millones de dólares en contra de Diario El Universo y sus principales directivos. Palacio ha sido uno de los periodistas sobre el cual el Presidente ha personalizado sus ataques a la prensa durante su mandato.
President of the Republic says he will combat those he callsink hit men permanently
On 12 July 2011, President Rafael Correa announced he has decided to combat what he calls the «press’ lies» and assured that that «may be my best legacy».
He added that with the new Communication Law he will combat, the «ink hit men» who «lie, lie and lie, dressed as journalists, who don’t even win their neighborhoods’ elections and go into politics illegitimately».
«Can they, because they are private media, publish or leave out whatever they want?That’s not ethical», said the President of the Republic as he assured that when the Communication Law bill arrives at his desk he will look over it and veto whatever he believes is necessary.
Regarding the lawsuit involving the newspaper El Universo, its feature writer Emilio Palacio and the latter’s recent resignation, he said that the process will carry on and that the journalist’s action is an isolated event. He also stressed that Palacio was requested to rectify the lies and injurious assertions he included in one of his articles; he was never asked to leave.»I won’t allow anyone to play with such sacred events as 30 September», Rafael Correa punctuated.
Feature writer Emilio Palacio resigned irrevocably to the newspaper El Universo stating he hoped that his leaving the paper would be motive for President Correa and his lawyers to drop the lawsuit for 80 million dollars against El Universo and its directors. Palacio is one of the journalists singled out by the president in his attacks against the press.
