Una réplica de media página impuesta por el Ministerio del Ambiente a diario El Universo, descalificó al periódico y lo acusó de “tergiversar, sesgar y no contrastar la información” contenida en una crónica publicada el 21 de mayo bajo el título: “En Chamanga, viviendas quedaron arrasadas por las réplicas del miércoles”, referente a la situación de los damnificados en esa localidad, ubicada al norte del país. Una de las más afectadas por el terremoto del pasado 16 de abril.
El texto, publicado en la edición del 26 de mayo y remitido por la directora de comunicación de ese Ministerio, Carmen Guerrero, cuestionó que diario El Universo no ha contrastado la información, ni con los ministerios del área social, ni con el Ministerio del Ambiente, o la gobernación. También recriminó que no hay “ni un solo testimonio a favor de la gestión pos terremoto que está realizando el Gobierno”. “Quizás si el periodista de El Universo se hubiera pasado en el campamento levantado por el Ministerio del Ambiente en Chamanga hubiera podido comprobar la atención que se ofrece a 980 personas damnificadas…”, reza el texto.
En ese sentido, la funcionaria mencionó que “hacer de una tragedia como la que se ha vivido un ejemplo de periodismo amarillista es lo último que cabía esperar de un medio de comunicación…Tergiversar, sesgar, no contrastar y ocultar información en momentos como estos es aún más deplorable, cuando lo que se requiere es informar equilibradamente y contrastar la información”, concluyó.
En una nota de la redacción, el diario sostuvo que la carta evidencia el desconocimiento de las normas elementales del periodismo y se refiere a que la nota, que fue redactada bajo el género de crónica, se enfocó en relatar el estado lamentable en que quedaron las viviendas en Chamanga.
El diario defendió su posición y aseguró: “Respecto a las diferentes versiones que constan en la nota periodística, aclaramos que son manifestaciones particulares de ciudadanos citadas textualmente, sobre las cuales el medio de comunicación no puede realizar modificaciones para favorecer y promocionar la gestión gubernamental, como usted lo sugiere. La publicación es un ejercicio de la libertad de expresión, del reportero y de los entrevistados, y no de un periodismo amarillista, como menciona la funcionaria en la malhadada carta…”.

The text, published in the edition of 26 May and sent by the Ministry’s director of communications, Carmen Guerrero, questioned the fact that El Universo failed to verify the information with the ministries of the social area, the Ministry of the Environment or the government. The official said that «making of a tragedy such as the one we have lived through an example of tabloid journalism is the last thing to be expected from a media outlet… Misrepresenting, distorting, failing to verify and hiding information in times like these is even more deplorable, when what is required is balanced and verified information», she concluded.
In an editor’s note, the newspaper stated that the letter shows the ignorance of the basic rules of journalism and states that the article, which was written as a feature, focused on describing the sorry state in which the houses of Chamanga were left.
The newspaper defended its position and stated: «In regard to the different versions included in the news article, we would like to make it clear that they are the declarations of citizens which we have quoted verbatim. The newspaper cannot change them to favor and promote the government’s administration, as you suggest. The publication is an exercise in freedom of expression, by the reporter and his interviewees, and not the creation of a sensationalist newspaper as the official states in her hapless letter…».
