Desde el 22 al 24 de julio de 2011, en forma reiterada y diversos horarios, el Gobierno emitió una cadena nacional de radio y televisión para justificar la demanda por injurias que presentó el presidente Rafael Correa, a título personal, en contra del diario El Universo, sus directivos y su ex articulista y por la que pidió una indemnización de $80 millones y tres años de cárcel para cada uno de los querellados.
La cadena emitida durante tres días consecutivos y de nueve minutos de duración fue difundida en tres horarios: 06:55, 12:00 y 16:00, en seis canales de televisión con señal nacional y las radios del país.
En ella, se dan argumentos para justificar la demanda que se generó a partir de la publicación del artículo de Emilio Palacio titulado “No a las mentiras” que habla sobre la actuación del Presidente en la revuelta del 30 de septiembre y textualmente dicen lo siguiente:
“El Presidente simplemente recurrió a las leyes… el Presidente simplemente defendió su honor al ser acusado sin pruebas de asesinato y genocidio, incluso en ciertas ocasiones pidió la rectificación pero nunca lo hicieron… ahora de manera burda y hasta grosera lo quieren hacer cuando se ven jurídicamente perdidos. Qué ironía que el Presidente redacte su propia rectificación esa fue la salida, ¡inaceptable!” .
En la cadena se insiste que el columnista acusó al Primer Mandatario de haber ordenado fuego a discreción, sin previo aviso, a un hospital lleno de civiles no es una opinión y que ante tales acusaciones de asesinato y genocidio se ha empleado el camino defendido por periodistas, el gremio e incluso el propio diario El Universo.
Para complementar aquello, se mostraron comentarios de periodistas como Juan Carlos Calderón, a quien también el Presidente ha enjuiciado por daño moral en un monto de 10 millones de dólares.
Official ‘chain’ broadcasted three days in a row to justify president’s demand in a personal capacity against newspaper El Universo
From the 22 to the 24 July 2011, repeatedly and at different times of the day, the government broadcasted a radio and TV ‘chain’ program to justify the lawsuit for slander filed by President Correa, in a personal capacity, against the newspaper El Universo, its directors and a former feature writer, in which he requested damages for $80 million and a three year prison sentence for each of the accused.
The ‘chain’, broadcasted three days in a row, which lasted nine minutes, was issued in three different time slots:06:55, 12:00 and 16:00, through six TV stations broadcasting nationwide and the country’s radio stations.
It presents arguments to justify the lawsuit filed after the publishing of Emilio Palacio’s article «No a lasmentiras» which deals with the president’s actions during the 30 September Police revolt, and says word for word:
«The President simply took recourse to law… the President simply defended his honor when he was accused of murder and genocide without any evidence, he even asked for a rectification on some occasions but they never acquiesced… now in a rude and even crass way, they want to do it when they realize they have been defeated legally.How ironic that the president should draft his own rectification, that was the way out, it’s unacceptable!»
The ‘chain’ insists that «the columnist accused the Chief of State of having ordered to shoot on sight, with no prior warning, in a hospital full of civilians, this is not an opinion, and that faced by these accusations of murder and genocide the course defended by journalists, the profession and even El Universo itself has been taken».
To complement this, commentaries by journalists such as Juan Carlos Calderón, whom the president has also sued for moral damage requesting ten million dollars, were shown.
