Feb 11, 2014

ENGLISH VERSION

Secom orders TV anchor to rectify a comment because it «lacks of objectivity»

On February 11th, 2014 Alfonso Espinosa de Los Monteros, news anchor of Ecuavisa television station, corrected a comment he made on January 28th, by order of the Secretary of Communication (SECOM). This Secretary considered that his opinion «lacked objectivity and livelihood.» In the commentary, the anchor expressed solidarity with Fundamedios and concern about the future of the organization, after the public announcement that the organization will have to Secom as its regulator.

As explained by Espinosa de los Monteros, the National Secretariat of Communication, Fernando Alvarado, sent a letter to the news direction on January 30th and another one on February 7th, asking for correcting the comment.

Espinosa de los Monteros dedicated three minutes from the news program to rectify and explain the following: «The Secom thinks that my comment lacked support and objectivity, because a day later, on January 29th, Fundamedios posted on its Twitter account the following: ‘Thanks to Ecuavisa for their solidarity, we clarify that there has not been any announce of self-dissolution. Scenarios are being analyzed ‘. The Secom claims that I have not done the contrast of sources, although the previous report in which I based my comment, met the prerequisites of  the information, including declarations of  the Ministry of Economic and Social Inclusion, contrasting what Fundamedios said «.

In that sense, and after explaining that his comments were based on declarations made by the director of Fundamedios in an interview prior to his speech, and also in a private communication that he sent via internet, the Ecuavisa’s anchor said: «noticing that Fundamedios message was issued after my comment, and because of that my opinion and worries has no basis anymore, I correct my comment, according to Secom’s petition”.

Fundamedios thanks, once again, the concern and solidarity of citizens, journalists, media and civil society for our situation. We insist that it is irregular and illegal that our principal aggressor is the Secom, the entity that tries to control us. We believe that this is a new example of that hostile attitude from that Ecuadorian state entity that has forced Ecuavisa to correct a comment.
