ENGLISH VERSION

Communication secretary and government owned media accuse fundamedios of promoting socialunrest

On 29 June 2011, the National Communication Secretary, Fernando Alvarado, accusedFundamedios of promoting «political strategies and military tactics organized to create confusion or promote public opinion trends that favor the interests of some of its financers»; while State-owned newspaper El Telégrafo accused Fundamedios director César Ricaurte of participating in an event organized by CIMA-NED, an organization which, according to the paper, is linked to the CIA.

Through a public letter published in his personal web page and in government media outlets such as news portal El Ciudadano, Alvarado said, regarding Fundamedios, that it performs political work by «pointing out cases of alleged attack against the press and hiding other more serious one of prior censorship against journalists who work for the large media emporiums. It also charged it with performing destabilizing actions by «stating without evidence that in Ecuador, democracy and respect for human rights are in danger,as well as promoting social unrest without any basis».

This letter was the reply to a notice sent by Fundamedios on 25 June as a response to President Rafael Correa’s declarations issued during his 226th Saturday TV and radio program Enlace Sabatino, through which he discredited Fundamedios and the work of NGO’s in Ecuador.

Meanwhile, State-owned newspaper El Telégrafo published a note affirming that Fundamedios is linked to the CIA.Under the title «Palacio and Ricaurte dissertate in entity linked to the CIA», the government newspaper described the participation of newspaper El Universo editorialist Emilio Palacio and Fundamedios executive director César Ricaurte in a public forum organized in Washigton D.C. by the Center for International Media Assistance – Latin America and the Caribbean (CIMA) and entity which, according to El Telégrafo, is associated to NED which in turn is linked to the CIA.

The government media outlet quoted Eva Golinger, who said that «several Ecuadorian non-governmental organizations receive funds from USA institutions that in many cases are used to promote destabilizing actions against progressive governments in Latin America».

Fundamedios reaffirms its commitment to the defense of principles and rights such as press freedom and the freedoms of expression and association. It also reiterates that so far it has not received funds from USAID, as the project quoted by the government is still in a preliminary stage. However, it notes that international cooperation is absolutely legitimate and legal and that it has not broken any legal regulations. For this reason we wish to raise the alert about these accusations as a form of persecution against the defenders of human rights in Ecuador.
