El 11 de abril de 2014 la tuitera y columnista de diario El Universo Betty Escobar (@basoledispa) denunció a través del abogado Joffre Campaña que ella y su familia fueron víctimas de amenazas anónimas a través de mensajes impresos que llegaron a su vivienda en Estados Unidos y a los domicilios de sus padres y tía en Guayaquil.
La tuitera señala, en el escrito presentado en la Fiscalía del Guayas, que el 7 de abril recibió un ramo de flores y una caja de chocolates en su residencia en Nueva York. Entre los obsequios estaba un mensaje impreso en una hoja de papel que decía «Tus amigos de Ecuador te visitaremos pronto«. Agrega que el mismo día, dos mensajes similares fueron dejados en las viviendas de sus padres y de su tía, ambos ubicados en la urbe porteña.
«En virtud que dichos mensajes pueden constituir una amenaza, pues fueron dejados de manera anónima y simultánea en dos países, dio aviso a las autoridades locales de Nueva York, las mismas que asignaron un investigador para que se encargue de esclarecer la procedencia del mensaje recibido en dicha ciudad«, señala Escobar en la denuncia .
En el documento, la tuitera dice temer por la seguridad de sus familiares en Ecuador y pide a la Fiscalía investigar la procedencia y a sus autores.
Escobar presume que los mensajes anónimos pueden ser consecuencia de sus opiniones que vía Twitter realiza sobre diversos temas de relevancia política que ocurren en el país, los cuales pueden estar hiriendo las susceptibilidades, así como por las opiniones vertidas en su más reciente artículo publicado en El Universo bajo el título «Vuelve a Nueva York», en el que cuestiona la visita del Presidente Correa a Estados Unidos.
Columnist and Twitter activist is threatened through anonymous messages
The April 11th, 2014 the Twitter user and columnist for El Universo journal Betty Escobar (@ basoledispa) reported through her attorney Joffre Campaña that she and her family were victims of anonymous threats through printed messages that came to her home in the United States and to the homes of her parents and aunt in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
The twitterer said -in the paper delivered to the Prosecutor’s Office in Guayas- that on April 7th she received a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates at her residence in New York City. Among the gifts was a message printed on a sheet of paper that said in Spanish: «Your friends from Ecuador will visit you soon.» The same day, two similar messages were left in the homes of her parents and aunt, both located in the port city of Guayaquil, the Ecuadorian’s second most important city.
Counting on that such messages may constitute a threat, as they were left anonymously and simultaneously in two countries, she notified to the local authorities in New York, were they assigned an investigator to be responsible for clarifying the origin of the message received in this city, «says Escobar in the complaint.
The document says that Escobar feared for the safety of her family in Ecuador and requested the Prosecutor to investigate the origin of the threats and their authors.
Escobar suspects that the anonymous messages could be a consequence of the opinions she usually posts via Twitter, about a variety of topics, including the Ecuadorian political issues, as well as for her comments expressed in her most recent article published in El Universo journal under the title «back to New York» in questioning President Correa’s visit to the United States.
That may be wounding the susceptibilities, according to her.
