Ene 27, 2012

ENGLISH VERSION

Government videos discredit journalist and investigation

On 21 and 24 January 2012, the government broadcasted two videos to discredit Teleamazonas TV station journalist FaustoYépez and his most recent investigations about spying operations carried out from the Ministry of Justice and the security of State ministers.

The first video against Yépez was broadcasted during the president’s 255th Enlace Ciudadano program and the second as a «chain program» on Tuesday 24, interrupting the interview program Los Desayunos 24 Horas and the Teleamazonas news program Comunidad during eight minutes in each case.

Both videos maintain that Yépez and Teleamazonas lied and that the “alleged investigation” “bases its information on the existence of a supposed spy network that would be working from entities such as the Ministry of Labor Relations”, and that “they have created a scam to sustain the fiction they have come up with».

The videos also refer to Teleamazonas as a “station where journalists who lack ethics create deceit”, and Yépez as “an alleged star journalist who just copies what others do”.The reason for this statement was that in a second report, the journalist complemented his information and mentioned another issue, related to the ministers of State, mentioning as an example the Ministry of Labor Relations and its security systems, which had already been revealed by Vanguardia magazine.

FaustoYépez questioned the fact that the government’s videos adapted the presenters’ scripts, information and opinions mentioned at different times to make the public believe that the reports stated that the Ministry of Labor Relations is using its security cameras for the purpose of spying.

The Teleamazonas journalist told FUNDAMEDIOS that they did carry out an investigation about spying operations carried out from the Ministry of Justice, with documents and testimonies that back it up, and in a second program they attempted to complement the information with facts about the security of ministries, using the Ministry of Labor Relations as an example. However, Minister Richard Espinosa felt affected by the reports and demanded a rectification, for which he invited the station to visit the ministry’s facilities.

Yépez stated that after the visit, during which he was followed by two government cameras, the station broadcasted an explanation stating that the security of the Ministry of Labor Relations and the spying operations carried out from the Ministry of Justice were two different things. It also stated that the video presented by the government was a manipulation of images and comments taken from two reports broadcasted on different days (9 and 10 January), but edited in such a way that they would appear to be related, with the purpose of discrediting the investigation.
