El 26 de febrero de 2011, el ciudadano Marcos Luis Sovenis fue agredido físicamente por militares de la Escolta Presidencial, por haber gritado «fascista» a la caravana del presidente Rafael Correa, durante una visita del Primer Mandatario a la ciudad de Babahoyo, ubicada a 340Km al Oeste de Quito.
Según narró Sovenis a Fundamedios, ese día salió en su bicicleta a buscar una pastilla para su padre y, al retornar, pasó por la Gobernación en donde se topó con el vehículo del Presidente Rafael Correa, quien se encontraba a bordo; al verlo, Sovenis lo llamó «fascista» y comentó que, al escuchar eso, el Presidente le pidió que repitiera lo que le dijo, entonces, Sovenis obedeció y, tras poner una cara de enfado, el Primer Mandatario hizo señas a seguridad para que lo detengan.
En seguida, Sovenis, de 31 años se vio rodeado de, al menos siete militares de la escolta, quienes lo subieron a la parte posterior de una camioneta. En el trayecto, este ciudadano dijo que lo golpearon en la cabeza, espalda, cuello, abdomen, hígado y riñones y que por segundos, se quedó sin respiración. También aseguró que los uniformados le dijeron que si estaban en otro sitio lo mataban.
Estos golpes le ocasionaron fuertes dolores de cabeza, vómito y diarrea, producto de una inflamación en su hígado, que posteriormente le fue diagnosticada en el hospital.
Según Sovenis, por fortuna no pudieron meterlo preso porque la policía les indicó a los militares que necesitaban un «parte policial» y que no podían irse en contra del debido proceso .
Este ciudadano aseguró que no fue su intención insultar al Presidente, ni tampoco ser déspota o sarcástico y si le dijo «fascista» fue porque en verdad cree que «eso es lo que está haciendo él». «No me retracto de lo que dije porque me parece una realidad y creo que actué por libre expresión y en democracia», sostuvo Sovenis.
Al momento, este ciudadano ya presentó una denuncia en la Fiscalía del lugar.
Citizen detained and attacked by president´s escort after he called the president fascist
On 26 February 2011, Marcos Luis Sovenis was physically assaulted by members of the Presidential Escort after he shouted «fascist» at the presidential convoy during the chief of state’s visit to the city of Babahoyo, 340km west of Quito.
Sovenis declared to Fundamedios that he had gone out on his bicycle to buy medicines for his father and on his return rode past the government’s headquarters where he saw President Rafael Correa’s vehicle with him on board. Sovenis called him «fascist» and when the president told him to repeat what he had said, he did so. The president was angered by this and signaled to his security personnel to detain him.
Sovenis, who is 31, immediately found himself surrounded by at least seven members of the escort who forced him into the back of a truck.Once there they hit him on the head, back, neck, abdomen, liver and kidneys. During the process he was unable to breathe for a few seconds.Sovenis also stated that the guards told him that they would kill him had they been somewhere.
The beating caused Sovenis strong headaches, vomits and diarrhea as a result of an inflammation of the liver which was later diagnosed at a hospital.
He said it was fortunate that he could not be imprisoned; the Police told the guards they needed a «warrant» and that they must follow due process.
Sovenis maintained it was not his intention to insult the president, or to be abusive or sarcastic, and that if he called him «fascist» it was because he really believes that «that is what he is doing».»I don’t take back my words because they seem true to me and I believe I acted in accordance with the freedom of expression and democracy», he said.
He has already filed a formal complaint with the local Prosecutor’s Office.
