El 17 de diciembre de 2012, una cadena de cuatro minutos ordenada por la Secretaría Nacional de Comunicación, interrumpió el espacio noticioso de la estación televisiva Ecuavisa, para descalificar a diario El Universo, por no dar cobertura a un festival que organizó el presidente Rafael Correa en 1986, cuando en ese entonces presidía la Asociación de Estudiantes Universitarios Particulares del Ecuador.
Este tema fue recordado por el Jefe de Estado el pasado 4 de diciembre durante el discurso dado en la Universidad de la Plata de Argentina, al recibir el premio Rodolfo Walsh. En éste Rafael Correa aseguró que «acordamos con diario El Universo para que le de cobertura al evento, pero como en esos días la federación decidió apoyar un proyecto de ley que prohibía la publicidad de cigarrillos y alcohol, el cual afectaba económicamente a los medios, ni siquiera me permitieron el ingreso al diario» .
Por ello, la cadena de gobierno aseguró que «no se cumplió el compromiso porque los universitarios ya no respondían a sus intereses». «El poder mediático de los medios mercantilistas, como hoy, se sintió en todo el país (…) Todo por intentar prohibir la publicidad del cigarrillo y de bebidas alcohólicas» y finalizó con la siguiente frase: «En 1986, las mismas mentiras que se repiten hoy, la misma defensa de intereses y el mismo descaro de los grandes medios mercantilistas y una vez más, diario El Universo hoy miente».
Government chain discredits newspaper for not covering festival organized by the President 26 years
ago On 17 December 2012, a four-minute ‘chain’ ordered by the National Communication Department interrupted Ecuavisa TV station’s news program to discredit the newspaper El Universo for not covering a festival organized by President Rafael Correa in 1986, when he was president of the Association of Private University Students of Ecuador.
This issue was recalled by the Head of State on 4 December during his speech at the University of La Plata in Argentina, after receiving the Rodolfo Walsh award.Correa asserted that “we had made an agreement with the newspaper El Universo so it would cover the event, but as in those days the federation decided to support a bill banning the advertising of cigarettes and alcohol, which affected the media financially, I was not even allowed access to the newspaper”.
The government ‘chain’ stated that “the commitment was not fulfilled because college students no longer responded to their interests”.»Then as today, the power of the mercantilist media was felt throughout the country (…)Just because of an attempt to ban cigarette and alcohol advertising”, and he ended with the following sentence:»In 1986, the same lies that are repeated today, the same defense of interests and the same shamelessness (…) and once again, El Universolies”.
